Description

The BF-149 has a snake blade: a wavy, serpentine edge rather than a straight one. It is the most distinctive shape on this bench and it comes with one genuine practical consequence that nobody selling these usually mentions.

What a wavy edge does when it cuts

A straight edge meets material along its whole length at once. A wavy edge meets it at the crests first, concentrating force into small areas, then draws the troughs through as you pull.

On fibrous material, rope, cardboard, webbing, that is genuinely effective. The wave grabs instead of sliding, and the effective cutting length is longer than the blade because the edge takes a winding path. On a flat push cut into something firm, it is worse than a straight edge, because you are only contacting at the crests.

  • Good at: sawing, drawing cuts, anything fibrous, anything that tends to slip away from a straight blade.
  • Poor at: push cutting, fine slicing, anything where you want a clean straight line.
  • Excellent at: being looked at, which is the honest reason most of these sell.

The part nobody tells you: sharpening

This is the real trade and it is worth knowing before you own one.

You cannot sharpen a snake blade on a flat stone. A flat stone contacts the crests and never reaches the troughs, so you end up with a blade that is sharp in the bulges and blunt in the curves, which is worse than blunt everywhere.

What you need is a round abrasive. A tapered ceramic rod, a small round diamond file, or a rolled piece of wet and dry paper around a dowel. You work the curve of the edge section by section, following the wave, keeping the angle consistent, then strop the whole thing to remove the burr.

It takes longer than a straight blade. It is not difficult, it is just fiddly, and if you were hoping to run this across a pull-through sharpener the answer is no, and a pull-through will actively damage it.

D2 butterfly knife steel, and why it suits this shape

D2 at 58-60 HRC holds an edge for a long time. On a blade that is more effort to sharpen, long edge retention is worth more than it would be on a plain drop point. You sharpen it less often, which is exactly what you want here.

D2 is high carbon and high chromium. It resists rust well without being stainless, so dry it and oil it occasionally and it will be fine.

Stag horn and engraved brass on a balisong handle

Shed antler panels between hand engraved brass bolsters. The stag grips well and needs no maintenance. The brass will dull to a warm brown over the first year and the engraved lines will darken faster than the polished faces, which makes the cut pattern clearer with age.

Who this is for

Somebody who wants a knife nobody else at the table is carrying, and who is willing to buy a round file. It is the most expensive D2 knife in this block, and the money is in the profile work: every curve on that edge was cut and matched by hand on both sides.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

8 reviews for Hand Forged D2 Steel Balisong Snake Blade Knife| Stag & Brass Engraved Bolsters Handle | Premium Butterfly Knife with Snake Shape Leather Sheath BF-149

  1. Rafael Johnson

No regrets on this purchase at all. Handle scales feel great in hand even during longer flip sessions. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. Worth every penny.

  2. Cody Parker

Perfect knife. Perfect action. No complaints. You can tell real Filipino makers built this. Made in the USA and shipped fast too. I keep coming back to Balisong Butterfly because it’s always this good. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. 10/10 would buy again.

  3. Barbara White

Solid knife. Glad I ordered it. Action is good though it needed a little tightening on the pivots. Handle feels solid, just a touch heavier than I expected. Would still tell others to give this a try.

  4. Peter Cole

Photos don’t do this knife justice at all. Love that it’s rooted in real Filipino balisong tradition but made and shipped from the US. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. This shop clearly takes pride in their work.

  5. Matthew Ross

Bought this on a whim and it turned out to be one of my favorite pickups this year. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. So worth it.

  6. Betty Price

This showed up faster than expected and looked incredible. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. Can’t say enough good things about this purchase.

  7. Mohammed Lewis

This has already earned a permanent spot in my collection. Balisong Butterfly keeps setting the bar higher with each order.

  8. Mark Anthony Jimenez

This blade came razor sharp right out of the box. Latch snaps shut clean every time. This flips cleaner than knives twice the price. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. Couldn’t be happier with this.
