VG10 Balisong Butterfly Knives
30 VG10 stainless balisongs, from $109.45 to $178.75, median $130.08. This is the most affordable shelf on the site and, for a lot of buyers, the most sensible one.
VG10 is a Japanese stainless steel with about 1% carbon, 15% chromium and a little cobalt and vanadium. It was developed for kitchen knives, which tells you what it is good at: taking a fine edge and not corroding while it does. On a balisong that translates into a knife you can carry in a pocket, handle with damp hands, and simply not think about.
Why VG10 for a First Butterfly Knife
If you are buying your first balisong, the two things most likely to disappoint you are rust and a soft edge. VG10 removes the first problem entirely and handles the second well. Combine it with the free trainer option and you have the sensible beginner setup: a blunt blade while you learn, in a steel that will forgive being left in a bag.

VG10 Against 440C and D2
Against 440C: VG10 is harder and holds an edge noticeably longer, at a similar price. Against D2: D2 wins on outright edge retention and toughness, VG10 wins on rust resistance and is easier to live with. Against high carbon: no contest on maintenance, VG10 needs none, but carbon steel takes a keener edge and sharpens faster.
Common Questions
Is VG10 a good steel for a balisong? Yes, particularly as a first or everyday knife. It resists rust properly, holds a fine edge, and sits at the lowest price point we sell. Its weakness is that it is slightly harder to resharpen than 440C or carbon steel.
Does a VG10 butterfly knife rust? Effectively no. At 15% chromium it is properly stainless. Ordinary care, rinse and dry after contact with salt, is enough.
VG10 or 440C, which should I buy? VG10 holds an edge longer; 440C is easier to sharpen and marginally tougher. At these prices the honest tiebreaker is which handle you prefer.
Is VG10 hard to sharpen? Moderately. A ceramic rod will maintain it; bringing back a badly dulled edge is easier with diamond. Less demanding than D2, more than 440C.
Can I order a VG10 balisong as a trainer? Yes, for the same price. Same steel, same handle, same balance. The only thing missing is the last pass on the stone. It is the combination we recommend most often to beginners.
Every VG10 balisong we make, by price
Here is the honest version of the VG10 shelf, cheapest first. We are not going to pretend the expensive one is automatically the one you want. VG10 holds an edge longer than 440C and asks for less babysitting than high carbon, and past that the difference between these knives is handle material and how long the run was. Every one of them ships with a fitted leather sheath, your choice of trainer or live blade at the same price, and a blade hardened to 58-60 HRC.

About our balisongs
The balisong began in Batangas, in the Philippines, and every knife in this collection is made in that tradition. Our knives are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States.
Blades are ground in 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus steel. Handles are fitted in kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone, and every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered.
Before a knife leaves the bench it passes a four-step quality process: detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.
Most orders ship in 1 to 3 business days and arrive in 4 to 8 business days across the USA, or 8 to 14 business days internationally. Out of stock knives are handcrafted to order in 2 to 3 weeks, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.
