The balisong is a Batangas knife. Filipino smiths have been folding a pair of handles around a blade there for generations, a design that answered a real need long before anyone flipped one for sport.
The makers behind Balisong Butterfly come from those families. They work in the United States now, with modern machining and precision tuning on hand, but the sequence they follow at the bench is the one they were taught.
More about the makers440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon, and Damascus.
Kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn, and bone.
A fitted leather sheath with every knife.
Layers of steel forge-welded together, then etched so the pattern shows. No two blades carry the same figure.
A balisong, or butterfly knife, is a folding knife with two handles that turn on a pair of pivots, so the blade sits between them when it is closed. It comes from Batangas in the Philippines. The knives we sell are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many of them from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. One handle is the bite handle, which closes onto the sharp edge; the other is the safe handle, which meets the spine. We offer both live blades and trainers, so the movement can be learned on an unsharpened knife first. Every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath.
Steel decides how a blade behaves. 440C stainless resists rust and is easy to live with. D2 tool steel holds an edge hard. High carbon takes a keen edge but wants oiling. VG10 is a fine grained Japanese stainless. Damascus is forge welded and etched, so no two patterns repeat. Handles are cut from kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone. For rust, Eezox protects the steel, and Bar Keepers Friend will lift heavy rust if it is used carefully. We ship worldwide, and you are responsible for customs, VAT and for checking that a balisong is legal where you live.
