The BF-146 is a Damascus blade with micarta panels and engraved steel bolsters. Micarta is the least romantic material on this site and it is quietly the most sensible, which is why it ends up on knives that get used rather than displayed.

What micarta is on a balisong handle

Layers of fabric, usually canvas or linen, soaked in phenolic resin and compressed under heat until they become one solid block. It was invented as an electrical insulator a century ago and knife makers stole it because it turned out to be very good at being a knife handle.

It is not plastic in the way people mean when they say plastic dismissively. It is a composite, and the fabric layers are visible as fine lines when you look closely at a cut edge.

Why it outlasts the pretty materials

Wood needs oil. Horn needs oil and hates dry heat. Mother of pearl chips. Stag is fine but unpredictable. Micarta asks for nothing and survives everything, and the only thing it will not do is look exotic in a photograph.

It changes, slowly and pleasantly

Handled micarta develops a slight sheen where your fingers sit, because the resin polishes against skin. It is the one way this material ages and it takes years to become obvious. Unlike a patina on brass you cannot undo it, and you would not want to.

The Damascus blade on this butterfly knife

Forge welded layers, folded, ground and etched so the pattern stands proud. It runs through the blade rather than sitting on the surface, so sharpening never removes it. Hardened to 58-60 HRC, where it behaves like good tool steel because that is precisely what it is.

Pairing Damascus with micarta is a deliberate contradiction: the showiest possible blade on the most practical possible handle. It works because the plain dark handle gives the pattern room to be seen.

Engraved steel bolsters

Steel rather than brass, cut by hand. Steel keeps a crisp engraved line and stays grey, so the knife holds its cool tone instead of warming up the way a brass bolstered knife does.

A note on our own listing
