High Carbon Balisong Butterfly Knives
Carbon steel is what the original Batangas balisongs were forged from, and it is still what a lot of veteran flippers ask for. Twenty-two high carbon balisong knives, $221 to $254, made the traditional way.
Why purists choose carbon over stainless
Three reasons, and they are all real.
It sharpens faster than anything else here. A carbon blade comes back to hair-splitting in a fraction of the time a D2 blade needs. If you maintain your own edges, this is a daily quality-of-life difference.
It is tougher at the edge. Run at roughly 57–59 HRC, carbon steel chips far less readily than a very hard stainless. It bends before it breaks.
It ages. Carbon steel develops a grey-blue patina over months of handling — a living surface that records how the knife has been used. Collectors either love this or they do not; there is no middle ground.
The honest trade-off
Carbon steel is reactive. It is not stainless and it will not behave like stainless. Wipe it dry after every session and keep a light film of mineral oil on the blade. Neglect it and it spots. Look after it and the patina that forms actually protects the steel underneath.
If that sounds like maintenance you would rather not do, 440C stainless gives you most of the performance with none of the upkeep.
Choosing from this range
This is the most consistent collection on the site — a tight $221–$254 band, weights between 5.8 oz and 6.3 oz, and kamagong wood or bone inserts. That consistency is deliberate: these are working knives built to one proven specification rather than a showcase of variation. Open lengths run 5.9 in to 9.4 in, including one genuinely compact build.

Why choose carbon steel over stainless for a balisong?
Three honest reasons: it sharpens faster than anything else we stock, its edge is tougher at the same hardness (it bends before it chips), and it ages — building a grey-blue patina that records how the knife has been used. Traditionalists also choose it because it is what the original Batangas balisongs were forged from.
Will a high carbon blade rust?
Yes, if neglected — this is the honest trade for everything above. Wipe the blade dry after every session and keep a light film of mineral oil on it. Handled that way it will not rust; instead it forms a stable patina that actually protects the steel underneath. Neglected in a damp drawer, it will spot.
What is a patina and should I remove it?
A patina is a thin, stable oxide layer — grey to blue-black — that carbon steel develops through contact with skin, air and use. It is not rust and it is not damage: it passivates the surface and slows real corrosion. Most carbon-steel owners consider it the best feature of the steel. You can polish it off, but it will return.
