The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

The BF-04 Banded Sugar Ant is a full-size Filipino balisong, forged and fitted by hand rather than stamped out in a factory. At 310g it is a heavy knife by balisong standards, and the brass frame with Philippine deer horn inserts is where most of that mass sits.
Sugar ants are famous for hauling loads far heavier than themselves. The name fits a knife that carries 310g of brass and horn on a 29cm frame and still comes around cleanly.

440C sits at the top of the 400 series stainless steels: it carries the highest carbon content of the group at 0.95–1.20%, together with 16.00–18.00% chromium, 0.75% molybdenum, 1.0% manganese and 1.0% silicon. Originally a bearing steel, it is usually heat treated to reach a hardness of 58–60 HRC and can be oil quenched for maximum hardness — which is why it has long been used for knife blades.
