The BF-24 Cockatoo is the least expensive knife in this series.95: stainless steel frame, kamagong inserts, 440C blade, 24cm open, 180g. It exists for the person who wants a real hand-made Filipino balisong and has a budget. This page is about what you do and do not give up at the bottom of our range, because that is the only question that actually matters at this price.
Start here, since everyone else starts with the good news.
- No exotic handle material. Kamagong and stainless. No horn, no antler, no bone. Kamagong is a genuinely excellent ironwood, but it is the material we have the most of.
- This one has inserts, and the insert channels do part of that job for us.
- Not the traditional 29cm size. This is a 24cm frame. The full-size knives in this run cost more.
What it absolutely does get you
The same 440C. That is the part worth understanding.
Our cheapest knife and our dearest knife use identical steel at roughly the same 58 HRC hardness. We do not have a budget blade and a good blade. There is one blade material in this series and the price differences live entirely in the handle work and the size.
It also gets you the same fitted leather sheath, the same free US shipping, and the same option to have it unsharpened for the same price.
And it gets you a knife that was fitted by hand. The pivots were set by a person who closed it, felt the play, and adjusted it before it went in a box. That is the actual difference between this and the knives in the next section, and it is not a difference you can see in a photograph.
The knives you should be suspicious of instead
There is a large market below this price and most of it is not worth your money. The tells are consistent:
| What the listing says |
What it usually means |
| “Stainless steel blade” |
No grade given, because the grade is not good |
| “Damascus” under $40 |
Acid-etched pattern on plain steel |
| No weight listed |
Nobody weighed one |
| Ten animal names, one photo |
Drop-shipped from a catalogue |
A grade is a number. 440C is a number. If a shop will not give you one, they have a reason and it is not modesty.

180g |
180g on a stainless frame
Slightly heavier than the 175g of most 24cm knives here and well short of the 195g Barb. The frame is stainless rather than brass, so it will not patina and it will not go warm brown over the years. It stays as it is.
For a first good balisong that is arguably an advantage. There is less to look after and less to worry about damaging while you are still dropping it regularly. Brass rewards patience. Stainless does not ask for any.
The name
Cockatoos are loud, showy and considerably smarter than they look. Two of those three apply to the cheapest knife in a range, which is the joke, and the third one is why we still put our own steel in it.
Trainer
The unsharpened option sits above the Add to Cart button and costs the same. At this price point that makes the Cockatoo the least expensive way to get a proper hand-made trainer with the correct weight and pivot feel, rather than a stamped aluminium thing that teaches you the wrong timing.
If you are buying your first balisong and you have never flipped, this is the specific combination we would put in front of you: cheapest knife in the range, ordered blunt.
Shipping your 440C balisong
Free in the United States. Flat $49 worldwide, no matter how many knives you order. Fitted leather sheath included.
the 440C comes out of the quench at 58-60 HRC. Harder than that and it chips; softer and you are sharpening it every fortnight.

Does the job but I wasn’t blown away. Made in the USA and shipped from the US, arrived in a reasonable time. Blade needed some sharpening once it arrived. Not bad, not amazing either. Balisong Butterfly is hit or miss it seems. This one landed in the middle.

Knew this was a good one the second I felt the weight in hand. Fit and finish is way above what I expected at this price. Already planning my next pickup from this shop.
Harold Sullivan –
Best butterfly knife I’ve owned so far. Weight is perfectly balanced for flipping. This is my third order from Balisong Butterfly and they never disappoint. If you’re on the fence just get it. You won’t regret it.
Todd Ramos –
This balisong is a genuine work of art. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. Can’t recommend this enough.
Paul Walker –
Absolutely love this balisong. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. Even the smaller details like the pivot screws are finished well. Fit and finish is way above what I expected at this price. Will definitely order again for another one.
