Description
Cockroach Balisong Butterfly Knife (BF-25)
Named for the most durable insect on the planet. Not elegant. Extremely hard to kill. The BF-25 cockroach balisong butterfly knife is hand-forged in 440C Stainless Steel on the traditional Batangas pattern in the Philippines, by smiths working the way balisongs have been made for generations.
Blade & Steel
Blade steel here is 440C stainless, the highest-carbon alloy in the 400 series and originally a bearing steel. Hardened to roughly 58–60 HRC, it holds a working edge well, resists rust in a way plain carbon steel never will, and is forgiving on a stone — which matters when you are flipping a knife daily rather than leaving it in a drawer.
Handle, Bolsters & Balance
The inserts are kamagong — Philippine ebony, one of the densest hardwoods in Southeast Asia and the traditional material for Batangas-made balisongs. It is heavy for wood, close to non-porous, and it darkens with handling, so the handles you carry for a year will not look like the handles you unboxed. The frame around them is stainless steel, which sets the knife’s weight and gives the inserts something rigid to sit in.
How It Flips
At 5.47 oz (155 g), this sits at the light end of the range. Light balisongs change direction fast — rollovers come round quicker, aerials need less wrist, and long practice sessions do not leave your forearm burning. It is the weight class most people learn on, and the one competitive flippers reach for when they are chaining tricks rather than showing a knife off.
Open, it measures in the compact-to-standard Batangas range — the size most Filipino makers settle on, and the size that suits the widest range of hands. Large enough to feel like a real knife, small enough to carry comfortably.

Who This Balisong Is For
The BF-25 suits anyone moving up from a mass-market balisong to a genuinely hand-made one. It is a working knife rather than a wall piece — it can be carried, flipped and sharpened — but the fit and the handle material make it a legitimate display piece too. If you are buying a gift, this is the price bracket where a balisong stops feeling like a novelty.
What’s Included

- A handmade wooden presentation box is included with every order over $170.

Care & Tuning
Wipe the blade dry after handling and put a drop of light oil on each pivot every few weeks. If the handles develop play, seat the knife closed and tighten the pivot screws a quarter turn at a time until the play disappears without the action binding. Zen pins and tang pins can be dressed with a fine file if the handles start to strike the blade — do this a few strokes at a time.
Live blade, sold to adults 18 and over. Customers are responsible for knowing and complying with the knife laws that apply where they live.
Frequently Asked Questions
What steel is the Cockroach balisong made from?
440C stainless steel, heat treated to roughly 58–60 HRC. It has 16–18% chromium, so it resists rust and fingerprints well, and it is easy to bring back to a shaving edge on a ceramic rod or fine stone.
Is the BF-25 a live blade or a trainer?
It is a live blade — sharpened and fully functional, not a practice trainer. Buyers must be 18 or older. If you are learning to flip, a dedicated trainer is the safer place to start.
How heavy is it and how does it flip?
It is a light-class balisong at 5.47 oz (155 g), so it changes direction quickly and is easy on the wrist over long sessions. Good choice if you are still building muscle memory.
Does it come with a box?
Yes. A handmade wooden presentation box is included with every order over $170. The box is made by hand, so grain and tone vary between boxes.
What is the handle made of?
Kamagong (Philippine ebony) inserts — an extremely dense native hardwood that darkens with handling.
How do I look after the blade?
Very little is needed. Wipe the blade dry after handling, put a drop of light oil on the pivots every few weeks, and check the pivot screws for tightness — that is the whole routine.
Does it come sharpened out of the box?
Yes. Every blade is sharpened and finished by hand before it is packed. It arrives ready to use — which is exactly why it is a live blade rather than a trainer, and why it should be handled accordingly from the moment you open it.
