440C Butterfly Knives
22 440C stainless balisongs, $110.00 to $247.50, median $137.50. 440C is the steel that has been in good production knives for decades, and it is still one of the easiest to recommend.
It is a high-carbon stainless, roughly 1% carbon and 17% chromium, which means it takes a proper edge while still being genuinely rust-resistant. It is a little softer than D2 or VG10, and that is not entirely a drawback: a softer blade is tougher against impact and much faster to bring back on a stone.
The Practical Choice
A 440C butterfly knife is the one to buy if you want a knife you will actually carry and actually sharpen yourself, without buying diamond plates or worrying about a wet pocket. Flippers who drop knives, and everyone learning does, tend to prefer a steel that chips less and reprofiles easily.

Common Questions
Is 440C good steel for a butterfly knife? Yes. It resists rust well, sharpens easily, and is tough enough to survive being dropped, which matters more on a balisong than on most knives. It gives up some edge retention to D2 and VG10.
Is 440C stainless? Fully stainless, at around 17% chromium. Normal handling will not mark it.
440C or D2 for a balisong? D2 if you want maximum edge retention and will use diamond stones. 440C if you want something easy to maintain and cheaper to own. For a first butterfly knife, 440C.
How often will I need to sharpen a 440C balisong? More often than D2, less often than plain carbon steel. The upside is that each sharpening takes minutes on a basic stone.
Can I get a 440C butterfly knife as a trainer? Yes, free on every knife here. Same blade, same handle, edge left unsharpened.

About our balisongs
The balisong began in Batangas, in the Philippines, and every knife in this collection is made in that tradition. Our knives are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States.
Blades are ground in 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus steel. Handles are fitted in kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone, and every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered.
Before a knife leaves the bench it passes a four-step quality process: detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.
Most orders ship in 1 to 3 business days and arrive in 4 to 8 business days across the USA, or 8 to 14 business days internationally. Out of stock knives are handcrafted to order in 2 to 3 weeks, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.
