Description

The BF-11 Barn Owl is the lightest brass-framed knife in this series at 165g, which makes it more expensive than several knives here that weigh more. That looks backwards. This page explains why it is not, because you deserve a real answer rather than a paragraph about craftsmanship.

Light brass is harder to make than heavy brass

Adding brass is easy. Removing it is not.

To get a brass-framed 24cm balisong down to 165g you have to thin the handle channels, and thin brass channels flex. A flexing handle means the two halves stop meeting square at the pivot, and a balisong that does not close square is a balisong that rattles for the rest of its life. So the material has to come out in the right places and stay put in the wrong ones. That is filing and fitting, and filing and fitting is hours.

The Barn Owl costs more than the 195g BF-10 Barb because it took longer to build, not because there is more of anything in it. Less of everything, in fact. That is the whole story.

What 165g feels like in the hand

  • Faster rotation for the same input. Less mass to accelerate means the knife turns quicker off a small wrist movement. Aerials come round noticeably faster.
  • Less forgiving. A light knife will not carry a sloppy rotation for you. It stops when you stop driving it.
  • You can flip for an hour. This is the one people underrate. Forearm fatigue is the real limit on practice time, and 30g off the total buys you a lot of extra session.
  • Quieter on the close. Less mass hitting the stop pin. Fitting for the bird, honestly.

The name is not decorative

Barn owls fly silently. The leading edge of the flight feather is fringed, which breaks up the air instead of letting it whistle, and the result is a bird that arrives without announcing itself. Of the twelve knives in this run, the Barn Owl is the one that makes the least noise doing its work. We did not plan that. We noticed it after the fact and the name stuck.

440C steel on a butterfly knife, and why we are not apologising for it

440C is high-carbon stainless, hardened here to roughly 58 HRC. Sharpen it on any decent stone and it comes back fast. Drop it on tile and the edge rolls rather than chips. Leave it in a damp bag for a week and it forgives you, which no high-carbon tool steel will.

Steel forums will tell you 440C is dated. On edge retention against D2, that is fair. For a knife whose entire purpose involves it leaving your hand at speed several hundred times a day, toughness and easy resharpening are worth more than an extra week between touch-ups. We have both steels on this site. We are telling you which one we would flip.

Kamagong balisong handle panels

Philippine ironwood, cut and fitted by hand into the brass. It starts a deep reddish brown and darkens toward black with handling. Two Barn Owls will never have the same grain, and if the two panels on your knife do not mirror each other, that is because they came from a tree and not a printer.

Trainer option on this 440C balisong

Every model here can be ordered unsharpened at the same price, this one included. The selector sits above the Add to Cart button. Same 165g, same pivots, same rotation speed, blunt edge.

Given that this is a fast, light knife that rewards precise input, the trainer is a genuinely good way to build that precision before there is an edge involved.

Shipping

Free in the United States. Flat $49 worldwide, one order or ten knives. Fitted leather sheath included, cut for the BF-11.

the 440C is taken to 58-60 HRC, the same hardness we use across the whole shelf.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Photos don’t do this knife justice at all.

  12. Kyle Watson

Overall a good buying experience. Blade is sharp but not quite razor sharp out of the box. Action is good though it needed a little tightening on the pivots. Minor nitpicks aside, good quality knife.
