The edge is the whole argument for this knife

A heron stands still for a long time and then commits to exactly one movement. We named this knife after that because high carbon steel behaves the same way at the edge: it either bites on contact or it does not, and this one does.

High carbon takes a finer edge than any stainless and finer than D2. That is not shop-talk, it is a consequence of grain structure. Fewer and smaller carbides mean the apex can be brought to a thinner, more even line before it starts crumbling. You can feel it on paper, on rope, on your thumbnail if you are the sort of person who tests edges on their thumbnail.

What you give up is edge retention. The same fine apex that cuts beautifully also rolls sooner than D2 would. You will be sharpening this knife more often. The good news is in the next section.

Sharpening a high carbon balisong, and why it is a pleasure rather than a chore

This is where high carbon quietly wins and where most product pages go silent because nobody wants to admit their knife needs sharpening.

High carbon comes back on an ordinary stone. A cheap combination waterstone, a few minutes, no special equipment, no swearing. If you have never sharpened a knife properly in your life, this is the steel to learn on, because it gives you feedback immediately and forgives a wandering angle.

Both steels in that comparison leave the bench at 58-60 HRC, so none of the difference below is a hardness difference. It is composition. The carbides in D2 are harder than the abrasive in a common ceramic stone, and there is nothing in high carbon that a plain waterstone cannot cut.

The rust question, answered plainly

High carbon steel will develop spots if you store it damp. Every maker knows this and a surprising number of shops pretend otherwise, usually by calling it “carbon steel” in one place and “stainless” in another and hoping you do not read both.

The actual routine is about fifteen seconds. Wipe the blade dry after handling. If your hands sweat heavily, wipe it after a flipping session too, because sweat is salt water and salt water is the fast version of the problem. A film of any light oil once a month is more than enough.

Do that and the blade darkens slowly into a grey patina, which is stable oxide and actively protects the steel underneath. Ignore it entirely for a wet year and you get orange pitting, which is not stable and does not protect anything. The difference between those two outcomes is a cloth.

Brass, a kamagong balisong handle and the 24cm frame

The frame is brass with kamagong wood inserts, running 24cm open with a 12cm blade at 180g. That is our middle size and it is the size most people should own first.

Kamagong is Philippine ironwood. It is heavy, tight-grained, and it does not move much with humidity, which matters on a handle that has to keep tight tolerances around a pivot. Brass gives the knife its mass and will patina with handling. Both of those are permanent characteristics, not finishes that wear off.
