Description

The BF-140 is a Damascus double edge with stag panels and engraved copper bolsters. Copper is unusual on a balisong, and it is the reason this page exists, because copper and brass age in genuinely different ways and most buyers assume they are the same thing.

Copper and brass are not interchangeable

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Copper is copper. That one difference decides everything about how the metal looks in five years.

New Brass: pale gold. Copper: pink orange, noticeably warmer.
Six months Brass: soft dull gold. Copper: deep bronze, darkening fast.
Years Brass: brown gold, stable. Copper: chocolate brown, and in damp conditions it can throw green.
Polished back Both return to new in about a minute. Copper starts darkening again almost immediately.

Copper is the more dramatic material. It changes faster and further. If you want a knife that looks the same in ten years, copper is the wrong choice and we would rather say so now.

Why copper against stag

Stag is pale cream to light tan. Against pale gold brass the contrast is gentle. Against copper it is not, and as the copper darkens the stag appears to get brighter, so the knife becomes more striking with age rather than less. That is deliberate.

The Damascus blade on this butterfly knife

Damascus here means layers of two different steels forge welded, folded, drawn out and then etched so the acid bites one steel more than the other. The pattern is not printed, coated or laser marked. It goes all the way through, which is why sharpening never removes it.

Worth being blunt: Damascus does not cut better than good mono steel. Hardened to 58-60 HRC it performs like a good tool steel because that is what it is. You are buying it for what it looks like. That is a perfectly good reason. It is just not a performance upgrade, and anybody claiming otherwise is selling something.

Re-etching, when the pattern fades

After years of handling and polishing, the etch can go faint. It is recoverable: a light polish and a brief dip in a mild acid brings the contrast straight back. Any knife maker can do it. So can you, carefully.

Stag as a balisong handle

Naturally shed antler, cut into panels. Every one is different and the surface is irregular by nature, which is the point. It grips well, warms in the hand, and needs no maintenance at all.

Who this is for

Somebody who wants the knife to change. It is one of the more expensive pieces in this block, and what you are paying for is the forge work in the blade and the hand engraving in the copper, both of which are time rather than materials.

What ships with it

Every knife leaves here sharpened, tuned and flipped by somebody before it goes in the box, with a leather sheath cut to this frame and a gift box around the lot.

Pick Trainer above Add to Cart and you get this same knife unsharpened: same size, same weight, same price. It is the sensible way to learn anything new.

Optional engraving runs $19 for initials or short text and $29 for a custom logo, selected on this page before checkout. United States shipping is free. Elsewhere is a flat $49.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Showed up right on time and looked even better than the photos. Even the smaller details like the pivot screws are finished well. Couldn’t be happier with this.

  2. Sophia Rodriguez

Got this as a gift for a friend and now I want one for myself too. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. Even the smaller details like the pivot screws are finished well. Love it.

Feels way more premium than the price suggests. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. If you’re on the fence just get it. You won’t regret it.

  11. Sarah Robinson

Ordered late at night on a whim and woke up glad I did. This is my third order from Balisong Butterfly and they never disappoint. Love that it’s rooted in real Filipino balisong tradition but made and shipped from the US.

Best butterfly knife I’ve ever owned. Hands down. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. This one’s a keeper for sure.
