The BF-150 is a D2 tanto with stag panels and brass bolsters. It is the knife we most often end up recommending to somebody who has been flipping a cheap balisong for a year and has decided to buy a real one. This page is written for that person.

What actually changes when you move up

Not the tricks. Everything you learned on the cheap knife transfers directly, and anybody who tells you otherwise is confusing a better knife with better hands.

What changes is smaller and more useful:

• The pivots stop being the limiting factor. A cheap balisong develops play in months. Every wobble is feedback you have to compensate for. When that goes away, moves you thought you were bad at turn out to have been the knife.
• The weight is consistent. Both handles matched, balance where it should be, so rotations behave the same way every time.
• It stops sounding cheap. A tuned balisong makes a single clean sound. A loose one clatters.
• It stops being disposable. This one is still working in twenty years.

What does not change

Your skill ceiling. If you are dropping a cheap knife on rollovers you will drop this one on rollovers, and it will hurt more because this one is sharp.

Use the trainer. It ships free with this knife if you ask for it. Learn the move on the trainer, then do it live. Every experienced flipper works that way and every beginner thinks they are the exception.

Why a tanto for a first proper knife

Because the tip survives. A tanto point is backed by a lot of steel where a fine point is backed by almost none, and a knife that is going to hit a floor a few times in its first month should have the strong tip.

The trade is that a tanto is poor at delicate tip work and needs its short front edge sharpened separately from the main belly. Neither of those matters much for a knife that is mostly being flipped.

What D2 at 58-60 HRC does on a butterfly knife

High carbon, high chromium tool steel. It holds an edge much longer than the soft stainless in a cheap balisong, and it sharpens on ordinary stones without special equipment. It is not stainless, so dry it and put a trace of oil on it now and then.

Stag horn and brass on a balisong handle

Shed antler panels, brass bolsters. Stag grips better than polished materials, especially when your hands get damp during a long session, and it requires no maintenance whatsoever. The brass will dull from gold to a warm brown over the first year. That is normal and it looks better than new.

Who this is for

Somebody upgrading, not somebody starting. If this is your first ever balisong, buy a trainer first and flip it for a month. We sell knives, and we would still rather you did that.
