Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Description

Look down the handle and the name explains itself — Philippine deer horn set in segments along the brass, joint after joint, the way a centipede moves. Each section is cut and fitted separately, which is why this one takes longer to build than the plain-inlay models.

  • Blade Materials – 440c Stainless steel
  • Handle Materials – Brass with Philippine Deer Horn Inserts
  • Overall Length – 24cm
  • Blade Length -12cm
  • Weight – 175g

440C carries the most carbon of any 400-series stainless: 0.95–1.20% carbon, 16.00–18.00% chromium, 0.75% molybdenum, 1.0% manganese, 1.0% silicon. It is a bearing steel that knifemakers adopted for blades, oil quenched to reach maximum hardness and usually heat treated to 58–60 HRC — corrosion resistant, and easy to bring back to a bright edge.

At 24cm overall and 175g it sits in the middle of the range: full-size enough to flip properly, light enough to carry. Part of the authentic Filipino balisong collection — read the history of the balisong if you want to know where the pattern came from.
