The BF-145 is Damascus with black horn panels and engraved brass bolsters. It is the darkest knife in this block, and pairing a patterned blade with a dark handle is a decision that works or fails on one thing: contrast.

The problem with dark handles and patterned blades

A Damascus blade earns its money by being looked at. The pattern only reads when there is enough tonal difference between the light and dark layers, and when the surrounding material does not compete with it.

Put a busy patterned blade against a busy patterned handle and the eye gives up. Stag against Damascus, for example, is two irregular textures fighting for attention. Some people love it. It is not restful.

Black horn does the opposite. It is dark, it is close to uniform, and it recedes. The blade becomes the only thing happening, and the pattern reads clearly from across a room. This is the combination we build when somebody says they want the blade to be the point.

The engraved brass in the middle

Brass is the third element and it is doing the connecting. Warm gold sits between the cool grey pattern of the blade and the flat black of the horn, and it stops the knife reading as two unrelated halves.

As the brass dulls over the first year it goes browner, which pulls it closer to the horn and makes the whole handle read as one object. A year old version of this knife looks more deliberate than a new one.

What the Damascus steel on this butterfly knife actually is

Two steels forge welded into a billet, folded, drawn out, ground and then etched. The acid eats one alloy faster than the other and the pattern stands up in relief. It runs through the full thickness of the blade, so sharpening will never wear it away.

Hardened to 58-60 HRC. It cuts like good tool steel, which is what it is. It does not cut better than mono steel of the same hardness and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Black horn balisong handles, and the one thing to avoid

Horn is keratin, grown by a buffalo, cut and polished. Warm to the touch, light, quiet against steel, and grippy when your hands are damp. Held to a light, most black horn shows amber streaking somewhere. That is how you know it is real.

Its only weakness is prolonged extreme dryness, which can crack it along the grain. Handling the knife prevents this on its own, because skin oil is exactly what horn wants. If it lives in a case, wipe the panels with a trace of mineral oil once a year and forget about it.
