Description

The BF-173 is a karambit balisong with black buffalo horn panels and brass bolsters. Horn and brass is the oldest material pairing in Batangas, and putting it on a karambit is either a nice piece of cross pollination or a category error, depending on how strict you are about these things.

Horn and brass, and why the combination lasted

It lasted because it solves a real problem cheaply. Brass is easy to work, does not rust, and machines to a tight fit around a pivot. Horn is free if you keep buffalo, comfortable in the hand, and does not conduct heat or cold.

The look came second. Nobody in Batangas set out to make brass and black horn a signature; they made knives out of what was in the yard, and a century later it reads as the classic combination because it worked well enough that nobody replaced it.

Reading real horn

Hold a panel up to a light. Real buffalo horn is translucent at the thin edges and almost always shows amber or honey streaking running with the grain. It is keratin, the same protein as a fingernail, so it warms in your hand within seconds.

Black polymer does none of that. It stays opaque, stays cool, and is uniformly black in a way nothing that grew on an animal ever is. If a listing shows horn that is a perfectly even black across the whole panel, you are looking at plastic or at very heavy dye.

What horn needs from you

Almost nothing, and one thing specifically. Its only real enemy is prolonged extreme dryness, which can open a crack along the grain. Handling prevents that on its own, because the oils from your hands do the job.

If the knife is going to live in a display case, wipe the panels with a trace of mineral oil once a year. If it lives in a pocket, forget this paragraph entirely.

The brass will not stay bright

It will go from yellow towards a soft gold and eventually a warm brown. That is the oxide layer and it protects the metal underneath. Polish it back whenever you like, or leave it and let it settle against the black of the horn, which is what we would do.

The ring on a dress knife

Worth saying plainly: a finger ring is a working feature, and this is a knife finished like a collector’s piece. That tension is the point of it. The materials say mantelpiece and the geometry says field tool, and the two arguing with each other is more interesting than either would be alone.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

  1. Victoria Flores

Knew this was a good one the second I felt the weight in hand. Even the smaller details like the pivot screws are finished well. Balisong Butterfly is quickly becoming my go to shop for balisongs. Already telling my flipper friends to check this out.

  2. Arjun Walker

This turned out to be way better than I thought it would be. This flips cleaner than knives twice the price. Happy customer here, through and through.

  3. Rachel Sanders

My skepticism about ordering a balisong online disappeared the second this arrived. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. Already thinking about what to order next from this shop.

  4. Michael Cole

Feels way more premium than the price suggests. This flips cleaner than knives twice the price. So worth it.

  5. Megan Nguyen

This one is top quality. No question about it. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. This will not be my last order from this company.

  6. Stephanie Edwards

This showed up faster than expected and looked incredible. I keep coming back to Balisong Butterfly because it’s always this good. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. Telling everyone I know to check this seller out.
