The BF-62 Horse is a 24cm high carbon balisong, 12cm blade, 180g, brass and kamagong. It is the second cheapest knife in this run, and this page is about what actually happens when you flip one, because most descriptions skip straight past the physics.

A balisong is a lever with a bad temper

Two handles rotate around pivots, the blade hangs between them, and the whole assembly turns around your index finger. Every trick in the hobby is a variation on controlling that rotation.

What decides how it behaves is not really the weight on its own. It is rotational inertia, which is mass multiplied by how far that mass sits from the axis. That is why a heavy handle with the weight spread along its length turns slowly, and a light handle with the weight concentrated near the pivot turns fast, even when the two knives weigh the same.

Why 180 grams on a 24cm frame is the useful default

The middle column is where most owners settle after they have handled a few knives, and it is why we build more knives at this weight than at any other.

The rollover, described properly

The bite handle is the one nearest the edge and the safe handle is the other one. Everything begins with knowing which is which, and if you get that wrong the knife will tell you.

1. Hold the safe handle. Let the bite handle fall away under gravity. Do not throw it.
2. As it comes round, rotate your wrist so the falling handle passes the back of your hand rather than the front.
3. Catch both handles together. The catch is a closing hand, not a grab.
4. Repeat until it is boring, then do it with your other hand and be humbled.

The single most common beginner error is driving the knife with the arm. Gravity does most of this and the wrist does the rest. If your shoulder is involved, something has gone wrong.

Pivot tension changes everything

We set pivots so a handle falls freely from horizontal without swinging past its arc. That is deliberately on the loose side, because a new owner can tighten a pivot easily and a knife too stiff to learn on is useless.

If yours feels tight out of the box, that is break-in rather than a fault. A hundred rollovers will free it up more than a spanner will. If you do adjust it, an eighth of a turn at a time, and flip it before you decide. People overshoot this constantly.

The steel: high carbon on a butterfly knife

Plain carbon steel: iron, about one percent carbon, essentially no chromium. Very fine grain, so it takes the keenest edge we can grind, and it comes back on any ordinary stone in minutes. It also rusts if you leave it wet, so wipe the blade dry when you put it down. That is the entire maintenance requirement.

Heat treated to 58-60 HRC. On a knife that spends its life in the air, that number matters more than usual: harder steel would chip when it meets the floor, and it will meet the floor.

Brass and kamagong as a balisong handle

Some of the 180g is brass, so the weight and the patina come from the same decision. Kamagong is Philippine ebony, dense and close-grained, and it will not crack, shrink or need oiling.
