Description

The BF-76 Mayfly is a 24cm high carbon balisong, 12cm blade, 180g, brass and kamagong. Two things on this page: where this knife sits in our high carbon range, and the law, which we are going to handle plainly and without jokes.

The whole high carbon run, priced

Every knife below is 24cm open with a 12cm blade at 180g, in plain carbon steel at 58-60 HRC, with brass bolsters and kamagong inserts unless noted. The prices differ on hand work, finishing time and how many were in the run. Nothing on that list cuts better than anything else on it.

Model Handle
BF-63 Human Brass and kamagong
BF-62 Horse Brass and kamagong
BF-67 Kingfisher Brass and kamagong
BF-60 Hoopoe Brass and kamagong
BF-59 Honey Bee Brass and kamagong
BF-57 Hedgehog Brass and kamagong
BF-61 Hornbill Brass and kamagong
BF-74 Malayan Civet Brass and kamagong
BF-71 Lizard Brass and kamagong
BF-75 Masked Palm Civet Brass and kamagong
BF-76 Mayfly Brass and kamagong
BF-70 Liger Brass and kamagong
BF-69 Leopard Cat Brass and kamagong
BF-65 Insect Stainless and bone
BF-73 Magpie Brass and kamagong
BF-66 King Cobra Brass and kamagong

If you are buying your first one, buy the BF-63 at the top of that table and spend the difference on nothing. If a particular handle contour suits your hand better, buy that one. Those are the only two good reasons.

The law, and we are going to be direct about it

Balisong legality varies by country and by US state, and in many places it distinguishes between owning one and carrying one. Those are separate questions with separate answers and people conflate them constantly.

Most of the “knife laws by state” pages on the internet are copies of a copy, several years out of date, written by somebody who has never read a statute. Some of them are wrong in ways that could cost you a great deal. We are not going to add another one, and we are not going to tell you what the rule is where you live, because we do not know and getting it wrong would be worse than saying nothing.

What we will tell you:

  • Check the current statute for your own state or country, from an official source, before you order.
  • Check it again before you carry, because possession and carry are frequently governed differently.
  • Age restrictions apply in most places and we comply with them.
  • We ship what is legal for us to ship. The rule that applies at your address is yours to know, not the courier’s and not ours.
  • If you are unsure, a trainer with no edge ground on it is a different legal question in a number of jurisdictions. It is still worth checking rather than assuming.

Safety, briefly and seriously

Buy the trainer first if you are new. A 12cm edge passing your knuckles while your timing is still guesswork is the one avoidable risk in this hobby, and it costs nothing to avoid it because the trainer is.

Learn over something soft. Stop when you are tired, because almost every bad drop happens in the last ten minutes of a session. And never try to catch a falling balisong. Let it hit the floor. The floor recovers and your hand takes longer.

The high carbon steel and the frame on this dagger balisong

Plain carbon steel: iron, about one percent carbon, essentially no chromium, heat treated to 58-60 HRC. Finest edge we grind, comes back on any stone in minutes, and it rusts if left wet, so wipe the blade dry when you put it down.

Twenty-four centimetres at 180g, brass with kamagong. Kamagong is Philippine ebony and needs nothing from you. The brass will darken to brown, which is normal.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.
