Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Description

BF-68 Ladybug — High Carbon Filipino Balisong

Small, bright and completely harmless-looking. The ladybug gets away with all three; the BF-68 only manages the first two. Underneath the friendly name is 180g of brass and a high carbon edge that behaves like nothing of the sort.

  • Blade Materials – High Carbon Steel
  • Handle Materials – Brass with Kamagong Wood Inserts
  • Overall Length – 24cm
  • Blade Length – 12cm
  • Weight – 180g

Heat-treatable carbon steel runs 0.30–1.70% carbon by weight; this blade is finished at approximately 58 to 60 HRC. What the trace elements do matters just as much. Sulfur makes steel red-short — brittle and crumbly at working temperature — so low-alloy grades such as A36 keep it near 0.05%, melting around 1,426–1,538 °C (2,599–2,800 °F). Manganese goes in to improve harden ability, and AISI allows up to 1.65% of it while still calling the result carbon steel.

Kamagong inserts are hand-fitted into brass. Made in the Batangas tradition, shipped from the USA.
