Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Description

The BF-74 Malayan Civet is built to the same traditional 24cm pattern as the rest of the high carbon line: brass handles, kamagong wood inserts, a 12cm blade and 180g in hand.

The Malayan civet is a night animal, dark-banded and easy to miss. Kamagong suits it — the Philippine ironwood is close to black, with banding that only shows up once the light catches it.

Specifications

  • Blade Materials – High Carbon Steel
  • Handle Materials – Brass with Kamagong Wood Inserts
  • Overall Length – 24cm
  • Blade Length -12cm
  • Weight -180g

Blade notes: high carbon steel, approximately 58 to 60 HRC. Carbon steels that can be heat-treated successfully carry 0.30–1.70% carbon by weight, and trace impurities of various other elements have a significant effect on quality. Trace sulfur makes the steel red-short — brittle and crumbly at working temperatures; low-alloy carbon steel such as A36 grade holds about 0.05% sulfur and melts around 1,426–1,538 °C (2,599–2,800 °F). Manganese improves hardenability, and up to 1.65% manganese by weight still counts as carbon steel under AISI’s definition.

Every knife is finished by hand, so grain, figure and polish vary slightly from piece to piece — no two are identical. Browse the full authentic Filipino balisong collection, or add custom engraving to make this one yours.
