Description

The BF-47 Frog is a 24cm VG10 balisong at 180g in brass and kamagong. Frogs sit still and then go, which is roughly how this knife behaves. It is also the page where we explain how to actually look after one, because nobody else seems willing to.

A balisong needs servicing and yours will not tell you

Every folding knife collects material in the pivot. A balisong collects more than most, because the handles swing through a full arc twice per flip and the channels are open at both ends. Pocket lint, dust, wood shavings if you work with wood, and a fine grey paste of old oil and brass particles that builds up over months.

The symptom is not a jam. It is a slow, gradual stiffening that you adapt to without noticing, until one day you handle a new knife and wonder why yours feels like it is moving through treacle.

The whole routine, twice a year

  1. Blow the channels out with compressed air, or a bicycle pump if that is what you have. Do this before anything wet.
  2. Work a cotton bud along the inside of each channel. It will come out grey. That is normal and that is the point.
  3. One drop of light oil on each pivot. One drop. People use ten and then wonder why the knife collects lint faster than before.
  4. Flip it thirty or forty times to distribute it, then wipe off whatever comes back out.
  5. Wipe the blade down while you are there. VG10 does not rust easily, but easily is not never.

That is the entire maintenance requirement for a knife that should outlive you. It takes about ten minutes.

Pivot tension, and when to leave it alone

Symptom Usually Do this
Stiff out of the box Not broken in yet A hundred rollovers. Not a spanner
Stiff after a year Dirt in the channel The routine above, before touching the pivots
Handles wobble sideways Pivot backed off slightly An eighth of a turn, then test. People overshoot this constantly
Grinding or grittiness Something in the pivot Clean it. Never force a gritty pivot
Blade sits off-centre closed Tang or pivot alignment Email us. This is ours to fix

What 180 grams does

It is the heavy end of the 24cm frame. The knife carries through a rollover on its own momentum, which gives you a fraction longer to correct a mistake, and it lands in the palm with a definite arrival rather than a flutter. Against that, it changes direction more slowly, so very fast chained sequences are easier on our 150g knives.

The VG10 steel in this butterfly knife

VG10 is a Japanese stainless from Takefu, designed for kitchen cutlery: roughly one percent carbon, fifteen percent chromium, plus cobalt, molybdenum and vanadium in small amounts keeping the grain fine.

Ours run at 58-60 HRC. Sharpening wants ceramic or diamond and a consistent angle, and you will be doing it once or twice a year at most. If it has gone properly dull and you are new to sharpening, take it slowly and keep the angle we ground rather than chasing a thinner one.

Brass and kamagong balisong handles

Kamagong is Philippine ebony. Dense, near black, close-grained enough that it needs no oiling and stable enough that it will not crack through a dry winter. The brass will darken over a year or two into a brown that most owners end up preferring, and polishing it back only restarts the process.

Trainer, sheath and shipping on this butterfly knife

The unsharpened trainer is the same knife, chosen above Add to Cart. Same steel, same 180g, same balance, no edge, and the same price because grinding an edge is one operation in a long build.

A fitted leather sheath is in the box. Take the knife out of it for storage rather than leaving it in there for months, because leather holds moisture and that is the one way you could give VG10 a rust problem. US shipping is free, flat $49 everywhere else for the whole order.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Craftsman hands checking blade alignment and pivot action on a finished butterfly knife

Checked four times

Detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.

Engraving available

Initials or short text $19 in the font you choose, a custom logo $29. Select it above Add to Cart and upload the logo file at checkout.

A sheath with every knife

Every knife includes a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.

Can’t stop flipping this thing honestly. Latch snaps shut clean every time. This is why Balisong Butterfly is my go to for anything balisong related. Respect to the Filipino craftsmanship behind this, all made and shipped from the USA. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. Can’t say enough good things about this purchase.

  11. Angela Bailey

Ended up ordering a second one after how happy I was with the first. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. This maker just earned a repeat customer.

  12. Antonio Martin

Bought this on a whim and it turned out to be one of my favorite pickups this year. Weight is perfectly balanced for flipping. This is the kind of purchase that makes online shopping worth it.

  13. Michelle Rivera

This turned out to be way better than I thought it would be. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. Would send this as a gift again in a heartbeat.

  14. Tyler Young

Was nervous ordering a balisong online but so glad I did. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. This one’s a keeper for sure.
