The BF-48 Gecko is a 155g VG10 balisong, brass handles with kamagong wood inserts, 12cm blade in a 24cm frame. Geckos are known for holding on to things, and grip is the honest subject for this knife, because how a balisong sits against your palm decides more about your flipping than any spec on the list.
Bare metal handles are worse than the internet thinks
Polished metal looks superb in a product photograph and behaves badly in a warm hand. Skin oil on smooth brass or steel turns slick within minutes, and a slick handle makes you squeeze, and squeezing is what stops a balisong rotating cleanly. Half the beginners who think they have a technique problem have a friction problem.
Wood inserts fix that without adding anything you have to maintain. Kamagong is dense enough to feel like part of the metal rather than a trim strip, and it stays grippy when your hands are damp in a way brass simply does not.
What the Gecko feels like
- Two textures per handle. Cool brass at the edges, warmer wood down the centre. Your fingers register the difference and you stop needing to look.
- 155g, just above the light group. Five grams more than the Dog, Duck, Eel, Fly and Fox. It reads as slightly more present without any of the effort of the 180g knives.
- Flush fit. Inserts sit level with the brass. Proud inserts catch skin during rollovers, which is the sort of thing you only learn by getting it wrong on a bench.
- It stays put when wet. Practise for an hour in summer and you will understand why this matters.
Grip is a technique problem too
The correct hold is looser than almost everyone’s first instinct. The knife should pivot in your fingers rather than being clamped by them, and your hand is a bearing rather than a vice. Anyone flipping smoothly is holding the knife less tightly than they appear to be.
A handle with good texture makes that possible, because you can afford to relax when you are not worried about the knife escaping. That is the entire practical case for wood inserts, and it is worth more than the fact that they look better.

Looking after a kamagong balisong handle
The kamagong needs nothing. No oil, no wax, no schedule. It is bare polished wood, dense enough that your hands slowly darken it rather than wearing it, and it will look better in year two than it does now.
The brass will patina, and that is not a fault. Polish it back whenever the mood takes you or leave it alone and let the knife look like it belongs to somebody.
Where it sits against the rest of the series
The Gecko is towards the upper end of the 24cm knives, level with the BF-43 Fire-Bellied Toad and a little under the BF-55 Hamster. It is the fit of the inserts and the finish on the brass, which is exactly the sort of thing that costs bench time and cannot be automated.
What VG10 actually is on a butterfly knife
VG10 is a Japanese stainless developed for kitchen knives, roughly 15% chromium at around 60 HRC. It takes a very fine edge, keeps it well, and does not rust in a sweaty hand, which is directly relevant to a knife you are going to grip for hours. It is also the cheapest steel band on this site, a fact that raises eyebrows given how the name gets used elsewhere. The trade is sharpening: once genuinely dull, VG10 is slower to bring back than 440C.

Got this as a gift for a friend and now I want one for myself too. Handle scales feel great in hand even during longer flip sessions. Fit and finish is way above what I expected at this price. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. Highly recommend this one to any flipper.

Good quality knife for the price. Handle feels solid, just a touch heavier than I expected. Nice that it’s US made with real Filipino balisong roots. Blade is sharp but not quite razor sharp out of the box. Would buy from this shop again.

This thing flips like a dream. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. Handle scales feel great in hand even during longer flip sessions. Love it.
