Handmade Damascus karambit balisong butterfly knife with black buffalo horn handle, brass fittings and anodised titanium ringHandmade D2 Steel Balisong Knife, Rose Wood & Brase Bolsters Handle, Premium Butterfly Knife with Leather Sheath BF-151BF-133 balisong butterfly knife, D2 eagle shape blade, rosewood handle with brass bolsters
Description

The BF-184 is a Damascus karambit balisong with black buffalo horn panels, brass fittings and an anodised titanium ring. It is the most expensive knife in this group and the pattern is why.

The honest statement first

Damascus does not cut better. It cuts like the tool steels it is made from, which is to say well. Two steels are forge welded into a billet, folded to multiply the layers, drawn out, ground and then etched so acid attacks the two alloys at different rates and lifts the pattern into relief. It runs through the full thickness, so sharpening will never remove it.

What it does not do is improve edge retention or toughness beyond what those steels already give you. We say this on every Damascus page here and we are not going to stop.

You are buying the pattern. On this particular knife, that is a better purchase than usual.

Why a curve suits Damascus

On a straight blade the pattern runs in bands parallel to the spine. It is handsome and it is static: the layers are laid down along the length and they stay along the length.

Grind a deep curve into the same billet and you cut through those layers at a changing angle. Near the spine the grind is shallow and exposes few layers. Down at the belly it is steeper and slices across many more. The pattern therefore compresses and stretches as it follows the curve, tightening where the grind is steepest.

The result is that the pattern shows you the geometry. On a straight blade the Damascus is decoration laid over the shape. Here it is a consequence of it, which is a different and better thing.

Black horn under a busy blade

The handle has one job on a knife like this and it is to be quiet. Buffalo horn is near uniform black with amber streaking that only shows against a light, so it gives the eye somewhere to rest after the blade.

It is keratin, warm in the hand within seconds, grippy when damp. Its only enemy is years of extreme dryness, which handling prevents by itself. If the knife lives in a case, a trace of mineral oil on the panels once a year is the whole maintenance schedule.

Anything sold as horn that is a perfectly even black through the whole panel is dyed or is not horn. Nothing that grew on an animal is that consistent.

The brass and the ring

Brass fittings at the pivot, and a titanium ring whose colour is an oxide layer grown electrically rather than a coating. It cannot chip off because nothing sits on top of it.

Three finishes on one knife is a lot. What holds it together is that they are at different scales: the pattern is fine and covers the largest area, the brass is small and warm, the ring is a single note at the far end. If any of the three were larger it would fall apart.

Ordering the BF-184

Sharpened, tuned and checked by hand, with a fitted leather sheath cut for this frame and a gift box. Store it out of the sheath, because leather holds moisture and an etched blade would rather it did not.

Or take it as a trainer instead. Identical frame, identical weight, no cutting edge, and the price does not move.

Laser engraving is $29, chosen on this page. On a Damascus blade we would put it on the handle rather than across the pattern. Free shipping inside the United States, flat $49 worldwide.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.
