The BF-151 is a D2 blade in rosewood with brass bolsters. Rosewood is the most common handle material on this site and the one people take least seriously, which is a shame, because it is doing more work than they realise.

Why rosewood on a balisong handle and not something prettier

Rosewood is dense. Denser than water, in most species, which is unusual for a wood and is exactly why it survives being a knife handle. Dense wood resists denting, resists the pivot area crushing over years of use, and does not soak up every drop of moisture it meets.

It is also naturally oily. Those oils are what stop it drying out and splitting the way a lighter, thirstier wood would when it spends its life in a warm pocket. A rosewood handle needs far less looking after than most owners assume.

The ten year look

This is the part worth buying it for.

New rosewood is a medium red brown with the grain visible but not dramatic. Handle it daily and two things happen slowly. The wood darkens, because oxidation and skin oil both deepen the colour. And the surface polishes, because your hand is a very fine abrasive applied thousands of times.

At five years it is noticeably deeper and has a low sheen you did not put there. At ten it is close to chocolate, and the grain that was subtle when it shipped is now the most interesting thing about the knife. No finish achieves this. It only comes from use.

Care, which is almost nothing

• Do wipe it dry if it gets wet. Dense and oily is not waterproof.
• Do put a trace of mineral oil on it once a year if the knife lives in a drawer rather than a pocket.
• Do not use furniture polish, wax or anything with silicone. They sit on top and go cloudy.
• Do not leave it on a windowsill. Sun bleaches rosewood, which is the one thing that makes it worse rather than better.

Grain, and why yours will differ

Every panel is cut from a different part of a different board. Some pieces have straight even grain, some have wave, some have a dark streak running through. We match the pair on each knife as closely as the stock allows. We do not match one knife to another, because that would mean throwing away most of a very slow growing timber to achieve uniformity nobody actually needs.

The D2 blade and the brass

D2 tool steel at 58-60 HRC, 14cm on a 29cm frame, 205g. High carbon, high chromium, long edge retention, sharpens on ordinary stones, not stainless. Brass bolsters carry the pivot and take the wear, and they will mellow from gold to brown over the first year alongside the wood.

Who this is for

Somebody buying a knife to keep. The rosewood is not the expensive part. The fitting is. But the rosewood is the part you will still be noticing in a decade.
