Description

It suits the person who wants a real Batangas-made balisong, cut and fitted by hand, without spending close to two hundred dollars to find out whether flipping is going to stick as a hobby. Stainless steel handles with kamagong wood inserts, a 12cm VG10 blade in a 24cm frame, 155g in the hand.

What you give up at the bottom of the range

Almost nothing that matters, and we know how that sounds coming from the people selling it. The blade steel is the same VG10 as every other knife in the range. Same heat treatment, same pivots, fitted by the same hands on the same bench.

What moves the price is the handle work. Stainless scales cost us less to cut and finish than brass, and kamagong offcuts are what we have most of. The Buzzard is cheaper because of what it is wearing, not because of what it is.

Stainless handles do not behave like brass

Most of the VG10 range runs brass handles. Three knives run stainless: this one, the BF-28 Crab and the BF-49 Gerbil. The difference shows up after about three weeks of carry.

  • Brass darkens. It takes on your fingerprints, your sweat and your kitchen, and goes from yellow to a dull bronze. Some people love that. Some people scrub it back every fortnight and quietly resent it.
  • Stainless stays put. Year three looks like day one. If you want a knife that does not develop opinions of its own, this is the one.
  • Stainless is harder. Brass dents when a knife lands on tile. Stainless mostly shrugs, which matters more than it sounds when you are still learning.

That last point is the real argument for the Buzzard as a first knife. Beginners drop things. We have yet to meet one who did not.

155g, and what that does to a flip

Across the VG10 range the weights run from 150g up to 225g. At 155g the Buzzard sits near the light end, and light knives rotate quickly and stop when you tell them to. There is less momentum carrying a handle round for you, so sloppy timing shows up immediately instead of being smoothed over. The upside is that your wrist is still willing after an hour, which is when practice actually turns into progress.

The steel, briefly: VG10 on a butterfly knife

VG10 is a Japanese stainless developed for kitchen knives. Around 60 HRC, roughly 15% chromium. It takes a very fine edge and it does not rust in any normal life. It is also the cheapest steel band on this site, which surprises people who have read the phrase “super steel” on a forum somewhere and assumed it meant expensive.

The honest catch: once VG10 is genuinely dull, it is more work to bring back than 440C. Hard steel cuts well and sharpens slowly. For a knife you will flip far more often than you cut with, that is a trade worth making.

Trainer version of this VG10 balisong, same price

Use the option above the Add to Cart button and the Buzzard ships unsharpened, exactly what the live blade costs. Not cheaper, not dearer. If this is your first balisong, order the trainer. We would rather say so now than sell you a sharp knife and a fortnight of plasters.

Every knife ships in a fitted leather sheath. Shipping is free inside the US and a flat $49 anywhere else.

the VG10 is hardened to 58-60 HRC, which is the window where it holds an edge without turning brittle on you.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

  12. Betty Wright

A bit disappointed with this one honestly. Blade had some play side to side. Just an average purchase. Wouldn’t rush to buy again.

  13. Harold Adams

Five stars isn’t even enough honestly. Will definitely order again for another one. Made in the USA and shipped worldwide with no long wait on my end.

  14. Brandon Moore

Did not expect this level of fit and finish for the price. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. Handle scales feel great in hand even during longer flip sessions. Weight is perfectly balanced for flipping. Already planning my next pickup from this shop.

  15. Ramon Evans

It’s a decent balisong. Nothing extraordinary though. Handle scales feel a bit plasticky for the price. Blade needed some sharpening once it arrived. Wouldn’t say no to it but wouldn’t rave about it either.

  16. Pamela Moore

A bit disappointed with this one honestly. Latch didn’t line up quite right at first. Blade had some play side to side. Expected more from Balisong Butterfly honestly. My last order was better than this. Probably won’t be ordering again.

  22. Harold Moore

Didn’t think a balisong at this price could feel this premium. Latch snaps shut clean every time. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. Exactly the kind of quality that keeps me coming back.

  23. Chen Barrett

Didn’t think a balisong at this price could feel this premium. This flips cleaner than knives twice the price. If you’re on the fence just get it. You won’t regret it. Not my first order from Balisong Butterfly and it won’t be my last.

  24. Walter Young

My skepticism about ordering a balisong online disappeared the second this arrived. Weight is perfectly balanced for flipping. Cool that these are made by actual Filipino craftsmen right here in the USA. Already added a few more items from this shop to my cart.
