Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition
The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

The BF-28 Crab is the odd one out in the VG10 line — stainless steel handles instead of brass, with kamagong wood inserts. Paired with a VG10 blade it is the most corrosion-resistant build in the group, and at 155g one of the lightest.
Crabs live where salt and damp ruin most metal, and they wear armour that copes with it. The Crab is specified the same way: stainless handles over a stainless blade, for the kind of climate that pits ordinary steel.

VG10 is a high-end Japanese stainless blend containing roughly 1% carbon, 1% molybdenum, 15% chromium, .2% vanadium and 1.5% cobalt. Those relatively small additions are what give it its unusual properties: great edge retention, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, hardness and toughness. It is very popular in Japan and one of the best choices for Japanese fishermen, and it stays reliable in a humid environment.
