Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Description

The BF-136 is the double edge build in the rosewood and brass line. Both sides of the blade are sharpened. That changes how you carry it, how you learn on it, and who should be buying it, so this page deals with that directly.

What double edge actually means here

A single edge balisong has one sharp side and one blunt spine. When you learn tricks, the spine is where your fingers touch. It is the safety margin every beginner leans on without realising it.

A double edge removes that margin. Both sides cut. There is no safe side to rest a finger against, and moves that involve the blade contacting your hand are simply off the table.

Who should buy one

  • Collectors. The symmetry is the point, and a collection knife does not need a safe side.
  • Experienced flippers who already work with a trainer for anything new and only move to the live blade once the muscle memory is set.
  • People who want the look. A double edge is a distinctly different silhouette and there is nothing wrong with wanting it.

Who should not

Beginners. Plainly. If this is your first balisong, buy a single edge from this same line, learn on it, and come back for this one in a year. We will still be here and the knife will still exist.

Every knife on this site can be ordered as a trainer instead of a live blade, and on a double edge that stops being a preference and starts being the sensible way to own the thing. Learn the move on the trainer. Perform it on the knife.

Sharpening two edges

It is twice the work and it needs to be even. If one side is sharpened at a shallower angle than the other, the blade develops a bias you can feel when cutting. Count your strokes, do the same number on each side, and check the reflection along both edges under a light before you stop.

D2 steel at 58-60 HRC on a double edge balisong

D2 tool steel, hardened to 58-60 HRC. High carbon and high chromium. It holds an edge stubbornly, sharpens with ordinary stones, and resists rust without being stainless. On a double edge that edge retention is worth more than usual, because you are maintaining two edges instead of one and you want to do it half as often.

The rosewood balisong handle

Rosewood between brass bolsters, 29cm open, 205g. Dark wood, warm metal. The wood darkens with handling and the brass dulls to a soft gold, both of which improve it.

The honest summary

Both are legitimate. Buying it as a first balisong is not.

What ships with this D2 butterfly knife

Every knife leaves here sharpened, tuned and flipped by somebody before it goes in the box, with a leather sheath cut to this frame and a gift box around the lot.

Pick Trainer above Add to Cart and you get this same knife unsharpened: same size, same weight, same price. It is the sensible way to learn anything new.

Optional engraving runs $19 for initials or short text and $29 for a custom logo, selected on this page before checkout. United States shipping is free. Elsewhere is a flat $49.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.
