Description

The BF-137 is a double edge D2 blade in rosewood and brass. Rather than repeat the steel talk you can read on any page here, this one is about the latch, which is the part of a balisong that gets the least attention and causes the most complaints.

What the latch is actually doing

The latch is the small catch that holds the handles together. Closed, it stops the knife opening in a pocket. Open, it stops the handles flapping while you flip. It is a tiny piece of metal doing two contradictory jobs and it is the single most common thing people get annoyed by.

The three things people complain about

  • Latch rattle. The latch taps against the handle during a flip and clicks. Some flippers hate it. It is not damage and it is not loose construction. It is a hinged part swinging.
  • Latch bite. The latch catches the web of your hand during a rollover. This is a technique issue far more often than a knife issue, and it stops once your grip settles.
  • Too tight or too loose. A new latch is usually slightly stiff. It loosens with use, and it should. If it is loose out of the box, tell us.

What you can do about it

If the rattle bothers you, a small piece of tape inside the handle channel silences it and takes ten seconds. Flippers have been doing this for decades and there is no shame in it.

If the latch bites, change your grip before you change the knife. Nine times out of ten the fix is your hand position and not the hardware.

Why we do not just leave the latch off

Some modern balisongs skip it. We keep it because this is a Batangas pattern and the latch is part of that pattern, and because a knife with two sharpened edges and no latch is a knife that can open in a bag. On a double edge in particular, we are not doing that.

The rest of this D2 balisong

D2 tool steel at 58-60 HRC, sharpened on both sides. Rosewood panels between brass bolsters, 29cm open, 205g. The wood goes darker with handling, the brass goes duller and warmer, and neither of those is a defect. It ships with a fitted leather sheath, and you can order it as a trainer instead, which on a double edge you probably should.

Who this is for

Somebody comfortable with a double edge who wants the traditional pattern rather than a stripped-down modern one. It is priced with the rest of this line, and the price reflects the hours in the handle work rather than anything exotic in the steel.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

7 reviews for Handmade D2 Steel Balisong Double Edge Knife| Rosewood & Brass Bolsters Handle | Premium Butterfly Knife with Leather Sheath BF-137

  1. Stephen Kim

Perfect knife. Perfect action. No complaints. Fit and finish is way above what I expected at this price. Latch snaps shut clean every time. This shop clearly takes pride in their work.

  2. Thomas West

Got this as a gift for a friend and now I want one for myself too. Ordered from Balisong Butterfly before and the quality stays consistent every time. Weight is perfectly balanced for flipping. Will definitely order again for another one.

  3. Stephanie Brooks

This one was a letdown compared to the listing. Surprised by this from Balisong Butterfly. My previous orders were much better quality. Handle scales had a visible gap on one side. Not what I expected for the price paid.

  4. Jonathan Garcia

Feels way more premium than the price suggests. Will definitely order again for another one.

  5. Scott Martinez

Five stars isn’t even enough honestly. Beyond happy with how this turned out.

  6. Carol Garcia

This exceeded what I pictured in my head before ordering. Already planning my next pickup from this seller.

  7. Sophia Rodriguez

Genuinely beyond happy with how this turned out.
