Description

The BF-44 Fly is a 150g VG10 balisong, brass with kamagong wood inserts, 12cm blade in a 24cm frame. It is one of the quick ones, and speed is a thing you build rather than buy, so this page is mostly about the unsharpened version of this knife and why we sell it for exactly the same money as the sharp one.

Same knife, same price, no edge

Above the Add to Cart button there is an option to order this as a trainer. Choose it and the Fly arrives.25 with an unsharpened blade. Not a discount, not a surcharge. Every model on this site works the same way.

People ask why we do not charge less for a knife we did not have to sharpen. Because sharpening is a small part of building one of these. The forging, the grinding, the fitting of the handles, the tuning of both pivots, the leather sheath cut to the frame: all of that is identical. Charging less would imply the trainer is a lesser object, and it is not.

What a trainer actually gets you

  • Repetition without consequence. The only way to get fast is to drop the knife several hundred times. That is a very different afternoon with a blunt blade.
  • The identical weight and balance. 150g, same pivots, same handles. Muscle memory built on this transfers directly to the live blade.
  • Somewhere to practise. You can work on a new trick on the sofa rather than standing over a towel in the kitchen.
  • A knife you are not afraid of. Fear makes you grip tight, and a tight grip is the single most common reason a beginner cannot flip smoothly.

That last one is the real argument. Speed does not come from the knife. It comes from a loose hand, and a loose hand comes from not flinching.

What it does not get you

A trainer is not soft and it is not a toy. It has the same 150g of brass and steel swinging on the same pins, and it will bruise a knuckle and chip a tile. Wear shoes, keep it away from your face, and do not hand it to a child on the grounds that it is blunt.

It also will not teach you edge awareness. Knowing which handle is the safe one becomes a reflex only when it matters, so most people move to the live blade sooner than they expect. Owning both is the normal path and the one we would recommend.

On the law

Rules on balisongs vary by country and, in the United States, by state. Trainers are not automatically treated differently from live blades everywhere, whatever a forum post from 2019 told you. Check what applies where you live before you order. We will not guess on your behalf, because guessing wrong is your problem and not ours, and that is not a position we are comfortable putting a customer in.

The steel on this VG10 butterfly knife

VG10 is a Japanese stainless developed for kitchen knives, roughly 15% chromium at around 60 HRC. Fine edge, strong retention, no rust. It is the cheapest steel band on this site despite the reputation the name carries. The one honest drawback is that a fully dull VG10 edge is more work to restore than 440C.

Sheath and shipping on this VG10 balisong

A fitted leather sheath comes with the knife, trainer or otherwise. US shipping is free and everywhere else is a flat $49.

the VG10 is taken to 58-60 HRC, the same hardness we use across the whole shelf.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Craftsman hands checking blade alignment and pivot action on a finished butterfly knife

Been eyeing this design for months and it did not disappoint. Even the smaller details like the pivot screws are finished well. Fit and finish is way above what I expected at this price. Weight is perfectly balanced for flipping. Will definitely order again for another one.
