Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Description

The BF-160 is a D2 double edge with micarta resin panels and brass bolsters. Micarta is the only handle material we use that gets better when your hands are wet, which sounds like a marketing line and is a genuine property of the material.

Why most handles get worse when damp

A smooth surface holds your hand by friction. Introduce a film of water or sweat between skin and surface and the friction drops, because the two surfaces are no longer really touching. That is why polished brass, polished wood and mother of pearl all become slippery once your palms warm up during a session.

Micarta does not work that way. It is fabric set in resin, and the fabric weave leaves a fine texture at the surface. Water sits in the low points of that texture instead of forming a continuous film, so the high points still contact your skin. The grip stays.

What that means in practice

  • Long sessions. Twenty minutes of flipping warms your hands. Micarta holds where polished materials start moving.
  • Outdoors. Rain, humidity, cold hands, none of it changes anything.
  • Double edge, specifically. On a knife with no safe spine, a handle that does not slip is a safety feature and not a comfort feature. That is why this material and this blade are paired.

The micarta resin balisong handle, briefly

Layers of canvas soaked in phenolic resin and compressed under heat and pressure into a solid block. It was invented as an electrical insulator over a century ago, and knife makers took it because it turned out to be almost indestructible.

It ignores water entirely. It dents rather than cracking. It does not swell, shrink, warp, rot or split in dry heat. It requires no oil, no wax and no attention of any kind. The only thing it does over time is develop a faint sheen where your fingers sit, because the resin polishes against skin.

The double edge

Both sides are sharpened, so there is no spine to rest a finger on. Any move that involves the blade touching your hand is off the table, permanently, regardless of skill.

Learn everything new on a trainer and bring it to the live blade only once the movement is automatic. That is how experienced flippers work and it is not optional advice on a double edge.

Sharpening two edges means matching them. Count strokes, keep the angles equal, and check both sides under a light before you stop.

D2 at 58-60 HRC on a double edge butterfly knife

High carbon, high chromium tool steel. Long edge retention, which is worth double on a knife with two edges to maintain. Sharpens on ordinary stones. Resists rust well without being stainless, so dry it and oil it occasionally.

Who this is for

Somebody who flips hard and long and wants a handle that will not betray them at minute twenty. The money is in the blade work and the fitting. The handle is the practical choice, not the expensive one.

What ships with this D2 double edge balisong

Every knife leaves here sharpened, tuned and flipped by somebody before it goes in the box, with a leather sheath cut to this frame and a gift box around the lot.

Pick Trainer above Add to Cart and you get this same knife unsharpened: same size, same weight, same price. It is the sensible way to learn anything new.

Optional engraving runs $19 for initials or short text and $29 for a custom logo, selected on this page before checkout. United States shipping is free. Elsewhere is a flat $49.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.
