Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Description

The golden-crowned flying fox is a Philippine endemic, and so is the balisong. The BF-53 keeps both traditions in one piece, local hardwood, local pattern, cut and fitted by hand in Batangas.

  • Blade Materials – Vg10 Super Steel
  • Handle Materials – Brass with Kamagong Wood Inserts
  • Overall Length – 24cm
  • Blade Length -12cm
  • Weight -180g

VG10 is a high-end Japanese stainless steel, roughly 1% carbon, 1% molybdenum, 15% chromium, 0.2% vanadium and 1.5% cobalt. Those small alloy additions are what give it its edge retention, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, hardness and toughness. It is a strong choice for knives used in humid conditions and is very popular in Japan, including with Japanese fishermen.

Handmade in the Batangas tradition and shipped from the USA. Our knife care guide covers keeping the pivots smooth and the blade protected; the rest of the range sits in the collection.
