The BF-143 is a double edge eagle profile in D2, rosewood and brass. It flips, so this page is about the pivots, which is where flipping actually happens and where every complaint about a balisong eventually traces back to.

The pivot is the whole knife

Everything else is material choice. The pivot is engineering. Two pins, two handles, one blade, and a fit tolerance that decides whether this knife feels excellent or annoying for the next twenty years.

Too tight and the handles will not fall under their own weight, so every move needs force and nothing flows. Too loose and the blade wobbles side to side, the handles do not close square, and the knife rattles. The window between those is narrow and it is set by hand, one knife at a time.

Play, and which kind matters

• Vertical play is the blade moving up and down in the channel. A trace is normal. A lot means the pivot has worn or was never right.
• Horizontal play is the blade rocking side to side. This is the one that matters. It gets worse over time, never better, and it eventually lets the edge touch the channel.
• Handle slap is the two handles not meeting squarely. Usually a tuning issue rather than a wear issue.

A new knife from this bench should have almost no horizontal play. If yours does, that is not break-in and it is not something to live with. Tell us.

What you can adjust and what you cannot

On a pinned balisong like this one, the pivots are peened rather than screwed. That is the traditional construction and it is stronger, because a peened pin cannot back out in your hand. The trade is that you cannot simply tighten it with a driver the way you can on a modern screw-together knife.

What you can do: keep it clean and keep it lightly oiled. Grit in a pivot is an abrasive, and abrasive plus rotation is how play gets created in the first place. One drop of light oil at each pivot every few months, worked in by flipping, is the entire maintenance.

What you cannot do: fix real horizontal play at home. That is a bench job.

Why brass bolsters help on a balisong

The pivot pin runs through the brass. Brass against steel is a better bearing pair than steel against steel, because the softer metal takes the wear in a controlled way instead of both surfaces galling. It is also why the knife quiets down and smooths out over the first few weeks rather than getting worse.

D2 at 58-60 HRC, cut to the eagle profile and sharpened on both sides. Rosewood panels, brass bolsters, 29cm open, 205g. Double edge means no safe spine, so use a trainer for anything you have not done a hundred times.
