Description

A genuinely small balisong: 20cm open, a 9cm blade and 135g on the scale, in D2 tool steel with brass and stag horn. It is not a scaled down version of a proper knife for people who cannot handle a proper knife, and the physics below explain why that idea gets it backwards.

Small does not mean easy

The assumption is that a mini balisong is the gentle option. Less weight, less blade, less to go wrong.

What actually happens is that a shorter handle completes its rotation faster. Rotation speed for a given push goes up sharply as the handle gets shorter, so the same flick that gives you a lazy, readable turn on a 29cm knife gives you a fast one here. Your timing window shrinks.

Flippers who move down to a mini after years on full size knives routinely overshoot for the first week. The knife arrives before they expect it. That is not a defect and it is not a beginner’s aid, it is a different instrument.

How much smaller, in numbers

BF-120 Mini Our 24cm Batangas knives Our 29cm Visayan knives
Overall length 20cm 24cm 29cm
Blade length 9cm 12cm 14cm
Weight 135g 200g to 220g 200g to 220g

135g against 220g is not a trim, it is close to forty percent gone. Put this next to a full size traditional knife and the difference is more dramatic than the length figures suggest, because you lose mass in three dimensions at once.

Who it actually suits

  • Smaller hands. A 24cm knife with 220g of brass in it is a lot of leverage for a hand that cannot comfortably span the closed handles. This one is not.
  • Long sessions. 135g does not tire a forearm. You can practise with this for an hour and still have a wrist afterwards.
  • Actual pocket carry. Closed, it disappears in a way the full size knives never manage.
  • Collectors of the pattern. The mini is its own thing within the Visayan family, not a novelty.
  • Anyone whose flipping has gone stale. Changing size resets your timing completely and is more interesting than learning another trick.

Specification for this stag horn balisong

  • Blade: D2 tool steel
  • Hardness: 58-60 HRC
  • Handle: brass with stag horn
  • Overall length: 20cm open
  • Blade length: 9cm
  • Weight: 135g

Stag horn on a small handle is the fiddly version of an already fiddly job. There is less surface to work with, so the figure you get is more concentrated, and no two of these look alike any more than the full size horn knives do.

What a 9cm blade will and will not do

It will do everything a normal pocket knife does. Boxes, cord, tape, food, the hundred small jobs that a knife is for. 9cm of D2 is not a small amount of cutting edge and it holds that edge as well as any other blade we make, because it is the same steel hardened to the same 58-60 HRC as the knives twice its size. Nothing here was scaled down except the dimensions.

It will not do heavy work. Less blade means less leverage and a smaller handle means less to grip when you are pushing hard. If you want a balisong that doubles as a serious field knife, take the length.

The Visayan connection

This sits in our Philippine Visayan line rather than the Batangas one. The full length Visayan knives run to 29cm open, which is the classic veinte y nueve, twenty nine, and the mini is the other end of the same family. Same regional reading of the pattern, very different knife in the hand. The BF-121 is the full length version if you want to see both.

Trainer, and getting this D2 balisong to you

The unsharpened option is above Add to Cart. Given what we said about the timing window, a blunt mini is a sensible thing to own even if you already flip well, because your first sessions on this size will not go how you expect. Same steel, same 135g, bevels left blunt. The trainer guide has the rest.

Fitted leather sheath included. Free US shipping, flat $49 worldwide. Pivot tension matters more on a light knife than a heavy one, and the knife care guide covers setting it.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

  1. Michelle Johnson

Been eyeing this design for months and it did not disappoint. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. Can’t recommend this enough.

  2. Rebecca Garcia

Showed up right on time and looked even better than the photos. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. So worth it.

  3. Peter Sanders

Was nervous ordering a balisong online but so glad I did. Action is smooth right out of the box. No break in needed. Worth every penny.

  4. Laura Roberts

Couldn’t ask for a better balisong honestly. This flips cleaner than knives twice the price. Love it.

  5. Carl Wilson

Ordered late at night on a whim and woke up glad I did. Bushings feel buttery smooth after just a bit of use. Exactly the kind of quality that keeps me coming back.
