The BF-144 is a Damascus eagle blade with stag panels and engraved brass bolsters. Stag is the material we get the most emails about, and almost all of them ask the same question: why does mine not look like the photograph.

The answer, straight away

Because it cannot. Stag is naturally shed antler. Every panel is a cross section of something an individual deer grew, and antler is as variable as a fingerprint. The photograph on this page shows one knife. Yours will be a different one.

What varies:

• Colour. Anywhere from near white through cream to a deep brown, sometimes across the same panel.
• Surface texture. Some antler is nearly smooth. Some has deep natural grooves running along it.
• Density and porosity. The outer bark is hard, the core is more open. Where a panel is cut decides how much of each you see.
• Match between the two panels. We match them as closely as the material allows. Perfectly identical is not a thing that exists.

Why we use it anyway

Because it grips. Antler has a naturally irregular surface that holds a hand better than any polished material, and it improves when your palm is damp, which is exactly when a smooth handle starts sliding. It is also warm, light, and effectively maintenance free. No oiling, no sealing, no fuss.

And because the variation is the point. If you want two knives that look identical, buy something moulded. If you want a knife nobody else has, this is how that happens.

Where it comes from

Deer shed their antlers annually. The material is collected after it drops. No animal is harmed to make a knife handle, and anyone implying otherwise is confusing antler with horn, which is a different material from a different animal entirely.

The Damascus eagle blade

Layers of two steels forge welded, folded, drawn and etched so the pattern stands up in relief. Cut to the eagle profile, which is the most labour intensive shape on this bench because both sides have to be filed to match. Hardened to 58-60 HRC.

Damascus is a pattern, not a performance grade. At this hardness it behaves like a good tool steel. Buy it for the look, which is a fine reason, and ignore anybody who tells you it holds an edge longer than mono steel.

Engraved brass bolsters on a stag horn balisong

Cut by hand. Brass will dull from bright gold to a soft warm brown over the first year, which sits better against stag than bright yellow does. Polish it back any time you like, or leave it.
