Description

The BF-141 is a D2 blade with mother of pearl panels and engraved steel bolsters. Mother of pearl is the most fragile handle material we work with, and if you are buying this one you should know that before it arrives rather than after.

What mother of pearl is

It is nacre, the lining that certain molluscs build inside their shells. Layers of aragonite platelets stacked so finely that they split light, which is why the surface shifts colour as you turn it. Nothing manufactured looks quite like it, and that is the entire reason it costs what it does.

It is cut in thin sections, bedded onto the handle and worked flat by hand. Slowly, because it will chip if it is rushed.

The honest warning

Mother of pearl is brittle. Not delicate in a precious way, brittle in a physical way. Drop this knife on a tile floor and you may lose a corner of a panel. Wood dents, horn scuffs, micarta shrugs. Pearl chips, and a chip does not polish out.

  • Do not use this as your learning knife. Learn on the trainer.
  • Do not flip it over concrete, tile or stone if you are still dropping things.
  • Do keep it in the leather sheath rather than loose in a drawer with other hardware.
  • Do keep it away from ammonia based cleaners, which attack nacre.

Handled sensibly it will outlive you. Handled carelessly it is the one material here that will not forgive you.

Why anyone buys it anyway

Because under a light it does something no other handle material does. The colour moves as your wrist moves. In a display case it is the piece people pick up first. This is a knife bought with the eyes and there is nothing wrong with that.

Engraved steel bolsters

Steel rather than brass, engraved by hand. The cool grey of steel keeps the pearl looking bright rather than warming it the way gold toned brass would, and steel holds a crisp engraved line better than softer metals.

The blade, and what D2 gives it

D2 tool steel at 58-60 HRC on a 29cm frame, 205g. High carbon, high chromium, holds an edge for a long time, sharpens on ordinary stones, resists rust without being stainless.

One thing to check on arrival

Our listing and our title disagree on whether this blade is a tanto or a double edge. The photographs on this page are correct. If what arrives does not match what you expected, tell us and we will sort it out. We would rather flag our own paperwork than have you discover it in the box.

Who this is for

A collector, or somebody buying a gift that has to look like an occasion. The price is in the shell and the hours of careful flattening, not in the steel.

Shipping & Delivery

Every knife is checked for lockup, pivot action and edge before it goes in the box. Nothing ships that we would not keep for ourselves.

Processing

Most orders leave the bench in 1 to 3 business days. If the knife you picked is not in stock we forge it for you, which takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks. Engraving adds a little time on top of that.

What shipping costs

  • United States: free on every order.
  • Everywhere else: a flat 49 dollars for the whole order, however many knives are in it, so two at once ship for the same as one.

How long it takes

  • USA: 4 to 8 business days
  • International: 8 to 14 business days, longer if customs takes an interest

Those are carrier estimates, not promises we can enforce.

Tracking

A tracking number reaches you by email as soon as the parcel is collected. Carriers often take 24 to 48 hours to start showing movement, so a quiet first day is normal.

Customs and local law

Import duty, VAT and customs fees are set by your own country and are yours to pay. Balisong law varies by country and by US state, so it is worth checking yours before you order.

The full detail lives on Order and Shipping and Return or Exchange.

Hand-forged in the Batangas tradition

The balisong was born in Batangas, Philippines. Every knife in this catalogue is made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States. Blades are ground from 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus, and fitted to handles of kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone.

Craftsman hands checking blade alignment and pivot action on a finished butterfly knife

Checked four times

Detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.

Engraving available

Initials or short text $19 in the font you choose, a custom logo $29. Select it above Add to Cart and upload the logo file at checkout.

A sheath with every knife

Every knife includes a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.

  1. Raymond Kim

Been eyeing this design for months and it did not disappoint. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. Highly recommend this one to any flipper.

  2. Antonio Baker

Absolutely love this balisong. Handle scales feel great in hand even during longer flip sessions. Can’t recommend this enough.

  3. Nancy Stewart

This balisong is a genuine work of art. Already planning my next pickup from this shop.

  4. Mohammed Stewart

Incredible action right out of the box. Weight is perfectly balanced for flipping. If you’re on the fence just get it. You won’t regret it.

  5. Eric Long

This thing flips like a dream. Fit and finish is way above what I expected at this price. Pivots feel dialed in with zero blade play. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. This shop clearly takes pride in their work.

  6. Frank Ruiz

This has quickly become my favorite piece in the collection. Action is smooth right out of the box, no break in needed. Blade came shaving sharp straight out of the box. Balisong Butterfly’s attention to detail is honestly unmatched. Love that it’s rooted in real Filipino balisong tradition but made and shipped from the US. This is going straight into my daily rotation.

  7. Benjamin Cook

This maker clearly knows what they’re doing with quality like this. Great buy overall.

  8. Brian Jones

Got this for a birthday gift and now I want one for myself too. Comes with a nice pouch which is a nice touch. This is my new favorite in the collection.
