Is VG10 the right steel for how you will actually use the knife?

Steel comparisons usually go wrong in the same place. People line up the numbers, pick the biggest one, and then carry the knife in a humid pocket for a year, where the biggest number turns out to be irrelevant. So instead of ranking steels again, we would rather ask a few questions about your life and let the answers pick for you. VG10 wins some of them outright and loses others without a fight.

Climate and cutting

Start with where you live. If summer means sweat and the air never really dries out, the rust column matters more than anything else on that table. VG10 and 440C are the two steels here that shrug off a damp pocket. D2 will spot if you close it wet. Damascus and high carbon want oil and a little ritual. None of this is a disaster, but a knife that needs care you will not give it is the wrong knife, however good the steel. In a dry climate, cross this question off and move on.

Then what it will cut. Be honest. Most balisongs open letters, parcels and the occasional apple, and spend the rest of their lives being flipped. For that, VG10's fine edge is lovely and its wear resistance is more than enough. If your knife is a genuine work tool that goes through rope, card and packaging every day, D2 will stay sharp longer and you should buy D2. We sell both and we do not mind which.

Drops, and whether it is a tool or an object

Will it be dropped? If you are still learning, yes. The guide puts VG10's toughness at moderate and says it prefers clean cutting over prying or hard impacts. A hard blade with a fine tip does not love tiled floors. High carbon and Damascus forgive a bad landing better. Our honest advice for this situation is not a tougher steel at all. Last, are you buying a tool or an object? If the pattern in the blade is the point, no steel comparison will talk you out of Damascus, and it should not. If you want a knife that looks the same in five years with very little effort, VG10 with a stainless handle frame is about as low maintenance as a balisong gets. Three of the thirty VG10 knives on this page have stainless frames: the BF-26 Common Buzzard, the BF-28 Crab and the BF-49 Gerbil. The rest are brass, which darkens as you handle it.

If you answered humid, light cutting, already flipping and low fuss, VG10 is the steel and this is the right page. If two or more answers pointed elsewhere, the 440C range or the Damascus range will probably suit you better.

Choosing between VG10 and the other steels
