Balisong Butterfly
Two handles, one blade, two pivots and a latch. That is the whole machine, and it is why a balisong butterfly opens the way nothing else does: the handles counter-rotate around the tang, so the blade is uncovered by the handles moving rather than by the blade moving.
Get that geometry wrong by half a millimetre and the knife rattles, bites its own handle, or closes on your finger. Which is exactly why pivot work is where we spend the most time and where cheap knives save it. All 127 balisongs here are pinned and hand-fitted, then checked for blade alignment and pivot smoothness before they go in a box.
Steel runs across high carbon, D2, VG10, 440C and Damascus, and 67 of these models are made in more than one of them. Prices $109.45 to $247.50, median $137.50. Ten are Traditional pattern and ten are Limited Edition.
If the mechanism is new to you, start on the unsharpened trainer you can order instead of the live blade. Your fingers will thank you for the first two weeks.

Can a balisong butterfly be anything other than a pocket flipper?
Yes, and this page is the proof. The two handles and two pivots that make a balisong open the way it does are a frame, and a frame can carry more than one kind of blade. Of the 151 knives here, 127 are the classic straight bladed flipper most people picture. Sixteen put a curved karambit blade on the butterfly frame, and eight put a kitchen blade on it. Same mechanism, three very different jobs. It is worth knowing which one you are looking at before you add anything to the cart.
The flipper: 127 knives, and still the one to start with
This is the balisong as Batangas makers have built it for generations: a straight blade, a latch, and handles that fold around the edge. It is the family with the widest choice by a long way, in 440C, VG10, high carbon, D2 and Damascus, with handles from kamagong and carabao horn to stag horn and rose wood.
If you want to learn to flip, want a first balisong, or want a knife that does ordinary cutting jobs, this is your family. The other two are brilliant at narrower things and awkward at most of what a flipper does well.
The karambit balisong: 16 knives with a curve and a ring
A karambit blade curves like a talon and has a finger ring at the butt. It cuts by drawing rather than pushing, so on rope, webbing, straps and cardboard it is a different tool from a straight blade. On a chopping board it is poor, and we would rather say so here. The ring is about retention: your finger goes through it and the knife stays in your hand when that hand is wet.
Thirteen of ours are high carbon, two are matte stone washed D2 and one is Damascus. The handle list is the most adventurous in the workshop: OD green and black micarta, wenge, walnut, olive burl, buffalo horn and bone, mother of pearl, copper and a skeletonised full steel frame, with titanium rings on three of them. The curve flips in an arc that passes closer to your fingers than a straight blade, so learn on a trainer. The full shelf is on our karambit balisong page.
The kitchen balisong: 8 pieces for the board and the table
Nobody needs a butterfly kitchen knife, and we will not pretend otherwise. What you get is a real forged kitchen blade on a butterfly frame whose handles fold closed over the edge, so the knife protects itself in a drawer. Six are chef knives, in high carbon, D2 and Damascus. Two are table pieces: a steak knife and fork set and a steak knife set of three, both high polished high carbon with rose wood. Handles across the eight include stag, ram horn, buffalo horn, buffalo bone, walnut burl and rose wood. Hand wash them, always. See the balisong kitchen knives shelf.
| Family | Listings here | Steels | Good at | Poor at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flipper | 127 | 440C, VG10, high carbon, D2, Damascus | Flipping, learning, everyday cutting | Nothing in particular, which is the point |
| Karambit balisong | 16 | High carbon (13), D2 (2), Damascus (1) | Draw cuts on rope, straps and cardboard | Board work and fine point work |
| Kitchen balisong | 8 | High carbon (5), D2 (1), Damascus (2) | Food prep and the dinner table | Flipping, pocket carry, the dishwasher |
Still weighing a karambit against a flipper? Our balisong vs karambit guide sets them side by side.
Questions about the three families
Do the karambit balisongs flip like a normal balisong?
The curved blade rotates inside the handle channel the same way a straight blade does. The difference is the arc, which comes closer to your fingers, so we strongly suggest learning on the trainer version first.
Can I order a karambit or kitchen balisong as a trainer?
The karambit balisongs can be ordered as a live blade or an unsharpened trainer at the same price, chosen just above the Add to Cart button. The trainer choice exists across the catalogue, though on a kitchen knife a blunt edge is rarely what anyone wants.
Are the kitchen balisongs dishwasher safe?
No. Natural handle materials and pivots do not belong in a dishwasher. Wash by hand, dry straight away, and oil a high carbon blade if the kitchen is humid.
Which family makes the best first balisong?
The flipper. It is the most forgiving to learn on, comes in every steel we keep, and has the widest spread of handles and sizes.
Are all three families handmade the same way?
Yes. Every one is forged, ground and fitted by hand by our Filipino makers, and each ships with a fitted leather sheath.
About our balisongs
The balisong began in Batangas, in the Philippines, and every knife in this collection is made in that tradition. Our knives are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States.
Blades are ground in 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus steel. Handles are fitted in kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone, and every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered.
Before a knife leaves the bench it passes a four-step quality process: detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.
Most orders ship in 1 to 3 business days and arrive in 4 to 8 business days across the USA, or 8 to 14 business days internationally. Out of stock knives are handcrafted to order in 2 to 3 weeks, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.
