The knives are made in the Filipino balisong tradition, in the pattern that came out of Batangas, and we ship them from the USA.

Every Knife Here Comes Two Ways

Every single butterfly knife on this page can be ordered as a live blade or as an unsharpened trainer, at the same price either way. Same steel, same handle, same pivots, same weight in the hand: the only difference is that the trainer's edge is left blunt. You choose on the product page, in the option just above Add to Cart. One knife, one price, two edges to pick from.

That matters more than it sounds. Learning to flip on a live blade is how people end up with stitches. Learning on a trainer that weighs and balances exactly like the knife you will eventually carry means the muscle memory transfers cleanly. Most shops sell trainers as a separate, cheaper product line with different hardware. We do not. You are buying the same knife either way.

What Steel Should You Buy?

We work in five steels, and the honest answer is that the difference between them matters less than most buyers expect. All five will hold a working edge. What actually changes is corrosion resistance, how hard it is to resharpen, and how the blade looks.

If you are buying your first butterfly knife and you do not want to think about maintenance, buy 440C or VG10. If you want a knife that will still be sharp after a season of real use, buy D2. If you are buying a gift or starting a collection, buy Damascus. Those three sentences cover most of the decision.

The blade shape changes less than people expect, but it is the first thing most buyers ask about. We make eight of them, and this guide covers what each one is actually for.

Handles, and Why They Change the Price

Two knives with identical blades can sit $200 apart, and the handle is almost always why. Stag horn and mother of pearl are natural materials. They have to be selected, matched and fitted individually, and no two pairs are the same. Rosewood and wenge are stable and warm in the hand. Micarta and G10 are the practical choice if the knife is going to get wet. Brass and steel bolsters add weight where a flipper wants it, at the pivot end.

Two Shapes That Are Not the Usual Balisong

Most of this page is the classic Batangas outline. Two groups on the shelf are not, and they are easy to miss if you are filtering by steel.

Balisong kitchen knives put a full 7 inch chef blade, or a steak knife, on a butterfly frame. It is an odd thing to hand a cook, and it is also the only chef knife that protects its own edge without a block. Damascus, D2 and high carbon, with horn, stag, bone and burl handles.

Karambit balisongs put a curved blade and a finger ring on the same frame. A karambit cuts by drawing rather than pushing, which makes it very good on rope and cardboard and poor at anything needing a flat point held to a board. We would rather say that now than after you have bought one.
