Which butterfly knife steel holds up best where you live in the United States?
A balisong bought in Phoenix and the same balisong bought in Pensacola will not age the same way. The knife has not changed. The air around it has. The United States runs from humid Gulf summers to desert dryness to northern winters, and blade steel reacts to all of it. Since every knife on this page ships to a US address, it seems fair to tell you which of our five steels suits which part of the country.
The short version: rust resistance comes mostly from chromium dissolved in the steel. 440C and VG10 have plenty and resist corrosion well. D2 sits in the middle. High carbon and Damascus have almost none and need looking after.
Humid, coastal and wet: the Gulf, Florida, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest
If your summers feel like breathing through a warm towel, or you live near salt water, buy stainless. There are 22 knives in 440C on this page and 30 on our VG10 shelf. Either will shrug off a damp pocket and a humid garage far better than the rest.
That does not rule out high carbon. It rules out neglecting it. A high carbon blade left wet will spot quickly in that climate, and our Damascus needs the same high carbon care. If you love the look, commit to drying and oiling it.
Dry country: the Southwest, the high plains, the mountain West
Low humidity is kind to steel. This is where our 22 high carbon knives are easiest to own, and where the traditional choice costs you the least effort. The keen edge high carbon takes, and how easily it sharpens back, make it very pleasant to live with when the air is not working against you.
The thing to watch in dry heat is the handle rather than the blade. Natural materials such as carabao horn and kamagong move with humidity, and horn can dry out and check if it bakes on a sunny dashboard or windowsill. Keep the knife out of a closed car in summer.
Cold winters: the Midwest and the Northeast
Cold on its own does steel no harm. The problem is bringing a cold knife into a warm house, where moisture condenses on the blade. D2 is a sensible middle here. It is semi-stainless, it holds an edge longer than 440C, and it forgives the odd damp evening, though it will still spot if ignored. Climate and care questions
Should I store my balisong in its leather sheath?
Carry it in the sheath, but store it out of it. Leather holds moisture against the blade, which is the last thing a high carbon or Damascus knife wants in a humid house.
Is D2 stainless steel?
Not quite. It contains a good deal of chromium, but much of it is locked up in carbides rather than protecting the surface. Treat D2 as semi-stainless: better than high carbon, not as carefree as 440C or VG10.
I live near the ocean. Can I still buy high carbon?
Yes, if you are willing to dry and oil the blade after use. Salt air is hard on any carbon steel, so if you know you will not keep up with that, choose 440C or VG10.
Can I keep a butterfly knife in my truck?
We would not. A closed vehicle in summer is hard on natural handle materials, and a cold cab in winter means condensation when the knife comes indoors. Check your local rules on carrying it in a vehicle as well.
Do handle materials react to humidity too?
Natural ones do. Horn, bone and hardwoods such as kamagong take up and give off moisture with the seasons, while micarta barely moves. Our handle materials guide compares them.

The balisong began in Batangas, in the Philippines, and every knife in this collection is made in that tradition. Our knives are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States.
Blades are ground in 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus steel. Handles are fitted in kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone, and every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered.
Before a knife leaves the bench it passes a four-step quality process: detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.
