Quality Butterfly Knives

Quality is a word every knife listing uses and almost none define. Here is what we check before a balisong is allowed into a box.
Blade alignment: the edge has to sit centred in the channel when the knife is closed, or it kisses the handle and dulls itself in your pocket. Pivot smoothness: it should swing under its own weight, with no grit and no side play. Heat treat: we name the steel grade on every listing because a grade you can look up is the only hardness claim actually worth anything. Finish: no tool marks left where a hand should have been.
Four checks, done by hand, on all 127 knives here.
What quality is not is a price tag. The median knife on this page is $137.50 and 72 of the 127 are under $150. A cheap knife is not the problem in this trade. An undefined one is.
Fitted leather sheath with every knife, the option of a matching unsharpened trainer at the same price as the live blade, and free shipping inside the USA.

How can you judge the pivot on a pinned balisong when there is nothing to adjust?

Buyers who come to us from modern production knives often ask the same slightly worried question: where are the pivot screws? On a traditional Batangas balisong there are none. The pivots are drilled and pinned, and the fit between blade and handles comes from hand fitting at the bench rather than from a screw you can turn at home. That changes how you judge quality, and it changes what you should do if something feels off.

Pinned, screwed, washers and bearings

Most modern butterfly knives use pivot screws with washers, bearings or bushings between the blade tang and the handle. Tighten or loosen the screw and the action changes. That is convenient, and it also means a badly made knife can be rescued for a while with a screwdriver.

A pinned knife has no such escape hatch. Traditional Filipino balisongs use none of those three systems. If the holes are drilled true and the pins are set properly, the handles swing freely and still close square on the blade. If the work was sloppy, there is nothing to turn. We like that. It means the quality of the knife is exactly the quality of the hand fitting, with nowhere to hide.

What a good pinned pivot feels like

You do not need tools to test one. Hold the safe handle level and let the other handle fall. It should swing freely under its own weight and stop cleanly, without grinding or catching. Close the knife and sight down the spine: the blade should sit evenly between the handles, resting against neither. Hold one handle and press the other gently sideways; you are looking for little or no side play. Finally, shake the closed knife beside your ear. A rattle that changes when you hold the latch still is the latch. One that does not is the pivot, and that is the one to worry about.

Before any knife leaves us it goes through four checks by hand: function, alignment, pivot action and blade condition. The tests above are how you repeat the middle two yourself.

If it does not pass, do not reach for a drill

Resist the urge to fix a pinned knife yourself. Disassembly or modification voids our warranty, and a peened pin is not something you undo and redo on a kitchen table. Our warranty covers misaligned handles, loose pivots, faulty locks and workmanship problems in blade seating or assembly. If you spot one on arrival, tell us within 48 hours of delivery. If it develops later, our pivot and hardware support is there for exactly this.

The full diagnosis method, including the section on pinned knives, is in our balisong tuning guide. For how pinned construction compares with modern pivot systems, read washers vs bearings, and the claim process is on our warranty page.

Pivot and build questions

Is a bearing pivot a sign of a better quality knife?

No. Bearings give a faster, freer swing; washers give a smoother, quieter one. Neither is better in the abstract, and a hand fitted pinned knife uses neither. Judge the fit, not the parts list.

Does a pinned balisong need oil?

A drop of light oil at each pivot now and then keeps the action smooth and stops metal squeaking on metal. Wipe away the excess so it does not collect grit.

Why do two of your knives of the same model feel slightly different?

Because each is fitted by hand. The swing on one may be a touch freer than on another. Both should pass the tests above.

Can I convert a pinned knife to screws?

Not without taking it apart, which voids the warranty and usually ruins the original fit. If you want an adjustable pivot, a pinned traditional knife is the wrong starting point.

Is harder steel a sign of higher quality?

Not on its own. Hardness trades against toughness and ease of sharpening, which is why we name the steel grade on every listing. Our knife hardness guide explains the trade.

About our balisongs

The balisong began in Batangas, in the Philippines, and every knife in this collection is made in that tradition. Our knives are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States.

Blades are ground in 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus steel. Handles are fitted in kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone, and every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered.

Before a knife leaves the bench it passes a four-step quality process: detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.

Most orders ship in 1 to 3 business days and arrive in 4 to 8 business days across the USA, or 8 to 14 business days internationally. Out of stock knives are handcrafted to order in 2 to 3 weeks, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.
