High Carbon Steel balisong knife
If you are learning to sharpen, learn on carbon steel. We have said that to every beginner who has ever asked, and it has nothing to do with what we would rather sell you.
Plain high carbon has a clean, fine structure without the hard chromium carbides that make D2 such an argument on the stones. It cuts readily on almost any abrasive: a cheap combination waterstone, a worn oilstone, the unglazed ring on the bottom of a mug in an emergency. You get feedback through the handle, the burr forms where you can feel it, and you can see progress in a few strokes instead of a few hundred.
That matters more than the spec sheet admits. A carbon blade you can put back to shaving sharp in ten minutes is sharp far more of the time than a super steel you are quietly avoiding sharpening. Edge retention is not much use if the edge never gets restored.
89 balisongs on this shelf, $110.00 to $247.50, averaging $156.35. The traditional carbon blades sit between $121.55 and $139.70.

How do you know a high carbon balisong actually needs sharpening?
We made the case above that carbon steel is the easy one on the stones. The question that follows, and the one we get more often, is when to sharpen at all. Most people sharpen too late, a few sharpen far too often, and both groups are guessing. You do not need to guess. Three quick tests tell you where the edge is, and the steel in your knife tells you how often you will be running them.
Test one: the light test
Hold the knife edge up and look straight down onto it under a bright lamp. A truly sharp edge has no width, so it reflects nothing. Dull spots show as a thin bright line, rolled spots as a sparkle. This test is free, safe and more honest than any cutting trick, because it shows you exactly where along the blade the edge has gone. Mark the bright sections mentally. Those are the only places that need work, and a strop may be enough.
Test two: paper, held loosely
Hold a sheet of printer paper by one corner and slice down through it from the heel of the blade to the tip. A sharp edge glides with a clean sound. A tired edge snags, tears or folds the paper at the dull sections. Newspaper is harder and tells you more. If the knife passes the light test but snags on paper, the edge is probably fine and slightly rolled, so strop it before reaching for a stone.
Test three: how it feels in use
The last test is you. When you notice yourself pressing harder to open a parcel or cut rope, the edge has already been dull for a while. Sharpen at the first sign of pushing, not when the knife refuses to cut. A lightly worn edge takes five minutes on plain carbon. A fully dull one takes a proper session.
How often, by steel
This shelf mixes three blade families, and they wear and sharpen differently. The hardness ranges below come from our own D2 vs Damascus vs 440C guide. We do not quote a figure for the plain carbon series here because that guide does not give one.
| Blade family on this shelf | Knives | Hardness (from our guide) | Stones that work | Sharpening rhythm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain high carbon, BF-56 to BF-77 | 22 | Not quoted | Almost any waterstone or oilstone | Little and often, quick to restore |
| 440C, BF-01 to BF-25 | 22 | Around 58 to 60 HRC | Waterstones are fine | Moderate intervals, moderate effort |
| D2, BF-78 to BF-122 | 45 | Around 58 to 62 HRC | Diamond plates or ceramic | Long intervals, slow to restore |
That last column is the whole trade in one line. D2 goes longer between sharpenings and fights you when the day comes. Plain carbon needs the stone sooner and gives in almost at once. Neither is wrong, but if you have never sharpened a knife, the carbon series lets you learn with quick feedback. For what the HRC numbers mean in the hand, read knife hardness explained, and for the stroke by stroke method, how to sharpen a balisong.
Sharpening questions, answered plainly
How often should I sharpen a high carbon balisong? There is no fixed calendar. Run the light test every few weeks of regular use and touch up the bright spots. A strop between sessions stretches the interval a lot.
What is the safest way to test if a knife is sharp? The light test. Look down onto the edge under a bright lamp and look for reflected light. No fingers involved, and it shows you exactly which sections are dull.
Should I strop or sharpen? Strop first. If the knife passes the light test but drags on paper, the edge is likely rolled, and leather brings it back. If bright spots remain after stropping, go to the stone.
Why does my D2 knife take so long to sharpen compared with carbon? D2 contains hard chromium carbides that resist ordinary stones. Diamond or ceramic abrasives cut it properly. Plain carbon has no such carbide load, which is why it restores so fast.
How can I tell which steel my knife is? Check the product title. On this shelf, BF-01 to BF-25 are 440C, BF-56 to BF-77 are plain high carbon, and BF-78 to BF-122 are D2.
About our balisongs
The balisong began in Batangas, in the Philippines, and every knife in this collection is made in that tradition. Our knives are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States.
Blades are ground in 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus steel. Handles are fitted in kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone, and every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered.
Before a knife leaves the bench it passes a four-step quality process: detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.
Most orders ship in 1 to 3 business days and arrive in 4 to 8 business days across the USA, or 8 to 14 business days internationally. Out of stock knives are handcrafted to order in 2 to 3 weeks, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.
