Balisong Prime: The Top of the Bench

32 knives, $173.25 to $549.45, median $244.48. Prime is where our makers stop optimising for price and build the knife they would keep. Engraved bolsters, mother of pearl and black horn, wenge and micarta resin, and a fitted leather sheath with every knife.

The steel is the same D2 and Damascus we use across the site. That is deliberate and worth saying plainly: a Prime knife does not cut better than a $180 knife from the same steel. What you are paying for is handle material, bolster work, engraving and finish. Hours of hand work that do not show up in a spec sheet but are obvious the moment the knife is in your hand.

Custom Balisongs and Engraving

Prime is also where most custom balisong orders end up. If you want a custom butterfly knife: your choice of steel, handle material, bolsters, and hand engraving. This is the line to start from. Engraving is done by hand after the order comes in, so allow extra time, and tell us what you want engraved before you check out.

Who Should Buy Prime

Collectors, people buying a knife to mark something, and flippers who have already owned two or three balisongs and know exactly what handle weight they want. If this is your first butterfly knife, buy a $110 to $140 knife in 440C or VG10 first, learn what you like, and come back. That advice costs us money and it is still the right advice.

Common Questions

What makes a Balisong Prime knife different? Handle material, bolster work, hand engraving and a fitted leather sheath. The blade steel is the same D2 or Damascus used elsewhere on the site. Prime is about the finish and the materials, not a better edge.

Can I order a custom balisong? Yes. Prime is the line most custom butterfly knife orders are built from. Choose the steel, the handle material, the bolsters and the engraving. Hand work takes time, so expect a longer lead than a stock knife.

Does a Prime knife come with a sheath? Yes, a fitted leather sheath is included. Do not store the knife in it long-term. Leather holds moisture against the blade.

Is a $500 balisong worth it over a $180 one? Not for cutting performance: the steel is the same. It is worth it if you want mother of pearl, hand engraving and a knife nobody else has. Those are legitimate reasons; better slicing is not one of them.

Can I get a Prime knife as a trainer? Yes, free of charge. Same knife, same materials, edge left unsharpened, which is a sensible way to own a knife at this price if you intend to flip it rather than display it.

What is mother of pearl like as a balisong handle? Beautiful and genuinely unique. No two pieces match, but softer than horn or micarta. It is a collector's handle, not a hard-use one.

The Prime shelf, cheapest first

Prime is where the run sizes get small and the handle work gets fussy. The steel is not doing anything exotic here, the hours are. If you want to know where the money went, it went into fitting, finishing and a batch small enough that we know which ones we made. Fitted leather sheath included, trainer or live blade at the same price, 58-60 HRC.

About our balisongs

The balisong began in Batangas, in the Philippines, and every knife in this collection is made in that tradition. Our knives are made by Filipino artisans and metalworkers, many from families with generations of experience, now working in the United States.

Blades are ground in 440C stainless, D2 tool steel, VG10, high carbon and Damascus steel. Handles are fitted in kamagong ebony, carabao horn, Philippine deer horn and bone, and every knife ships with a fitted leather sheath. Both live blades and trainers are offered.

Before a knife leaves the bench it passes a four-step quality process: detailed hand inspection, smoothness and pivot testing, blade alignment checks, and durability and finish quality control. If a knife doesn't meet our standards, it never reaches our customers.

Most orders ship in 1 to 3 business days and arrive in 4 to 8 business days across the USA, or 8 to 14 business days internationally. Out of stock knives are handcrafted to order in 2 to 3 weeks, and every order ships worldwide with tracking.
