How do you make a D2 edge last as long as the steel allows?

The description above gives you the honest version of D2 edge retention: long intervals, if you actually cut things. What it does not tell you is how easily owners throw that advantage away. Two owners with identical D2 knives can get very different intervals, and the difference is almost always habits rather than steel. Here are the ones that matter, from the workshop side of the bench.

Stop cutting on the wrong surfaces

Nothing blunts an edge faster than what sits under the thing you are cutting. A glass chopping board, a ceramic plate, a concrete step or a stone worktop will flatten a D2 edge in a few strokes, carbides or not. Those carbides are hard, but the surface beneath them is harder. Cut onto wood, plastic, cardboard or nothing at all. If you open parcels on the kitchen counter, slide a flattened box underneath. It costs you nothing and it is the single biggest habit change we can recommend.

Cut, do not twist or pry

Our own D2 vs Damascus vs 440C guide puts D2 at around 58 to 62 HRC. Hardness at that level is exactly what holds the edge, and it is also why D2 does not enjoy sideways loads. Twisting the blade to snap tape, prying open a tin or levering a staple out puts force across the edge, and a hard edge answers with a chip instead of a bend. A chip ends the long interval you paid for on the spot, and fixing it means removing steel on a diamond plate. Use a screwdriver for screwdriver work. Use the whole edge, not the first two centimetres

Most people cut with the part of the blade nearest the handle, over and over, and wear that section down while the rest stays sharp. Draw cuts along the full length instead, heel to tip. You spread the wear across more steel, and more steel is exactly what the longer knives on this shelf give you.

A 14cm blade carries noticeably more working edge than a 9cm one. If cutting volume is the reason you are choosing D2 in the first place, the 29cm knives stretch the interval further simply by giving the wear more room.

Clean the edge and touch it up early

Tape adhesive and cardboard dust cling to an edge and make it feel duller than it is. Wipe the blade with a little oil or alcohol after sticky jobs. Then, the moment you notice the edge dragging, give it a few passes on a strop or a fine ceramic rod. A lightly rolled D2 edge comes back in a minute.
